The Global Entry program was designed to expedite the entry process for low-risk travelers into the U.S., significantly cutting down wait times at airports and streamlining customs and immigration procedures, allowing users to pass through security in just minutes. It’s set to become even more efficient.
Recently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) introduced a new app enabling Global Entry members to fill out their arrival documents on their smartphones, eliminating the need to wait for a kiosk.
“The new Global Entry mobile application utilizes cutting-edge technology to bolster security while enhancing the travel experience for CBP’s trusted travelers,” stated Troy A. Miller, CBP’s senior official acting as Commissioner, in a recent announcement.
After landing, users can take a selfie with the app, which, according to CBP, will be “matched against a photo gallery to confirm their identity using facial biometrics.” This photo will be sent to CBP, and travelers will receive a digital receipt via the app, allowing them to go straight to CBP officers to complete their arrival process.
Currently, the Global Entry app is accessible only to travelers arriving at seven airports:
- Seattle–Tacoma International Airport
- Los Angeles International Airport
- Miami International Airport
- Orlando International Airport
- Washington Dulles International Airport
- Pittsburgh International Airport
- Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport
In a statement, CBP mentioned that they might expand the app to include more airports in the future; at present, over 50 U.S. airports offer Global Entry, along with more than a dozen international airports, such as Abu Dhabi International Airport, Dublin Airport, and Toronto Pearson International Airport.
The app is free and can now be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. However, you must be registered with the Global Entry program to utilize the app.
For those not enrolled yet but interested, you'll need to create a Trusted Travel Programs (TTP) account, complete the online application, and pay a $100 enrollment fee (which is covered by some travel credit cards, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the American Express Platinum card). After submitting your application, a CBP officer will review it. If conditionally approved, you'll be invited to schedule an in-person interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center, where you'll verify your application details and provide your photo and fingerprints. Currently, processing times range from four to six months, and interview slots can be scarce. However, you might secure an appointment sooner through options like Enrollment on Arrival or by using Appointment Scanner, which helps travelers find last-minute openings.
