For adult U.S. citizens, the journey usually starts with completing the DS-11 form, available on the U.S. Department of State website. After filling it out, applicants can calculate their total fees using the site’s convenient calculator, then prepare a check or money order, as most passport acceptance centers don’t accept cash or cards.

Next, applicants need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship (options include a birth certificate or naturalization certificate), along with a photocopy of this document, a valid ID with its photocopy, and a photo that meets U.S. Department of State passport photo requirements. Once all these documents are gathered, applicants can find a passport acceptance facility via the bureau’s online portal and schedule an appointment to submit their application. Unfortunately, first-time passport applications must be submitted in person, typically at a local post office.

In contrast, those with passports close to expiring (note: most countries require that passports be valid for at least six months to enter) or running out of stamp space can enjoy a much simpler renewal process. If eligible for mail renewal, applicants should complete a DS-82 form, include their current passport, any necessary name change documentation, an acceptable photo, and a check or money order, then mail their application for processing.

Travel plans can change unexpectedly, and if you find yourself with an upcoming international trip but no valid passport, there may still be a solution. The U.S. Department of State collaborates with various passport agencies and centers specifically designed to assist individuals with urgent travel needs within the next 14 days.

Travelers can reach out to the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment. Both Life-or-Death Emergency Service and Urgent Travel Service options are available based on the situation. After contacting the center, eligible callers will be assisted in booking the earliest possible appointment at a nearby office. Please note that walk-ins are not permitted, so all travelers must call the above number to secure an appointment.

How to Fast-Track Your Passport Application

If you’re anxiously waiting for your passport and need to embark on a last-minute journey, contact the National Passport Information Center at the number provided earlier and request a switch from routine to expedited processing. After your call, you will receive an email with details on how to pay the $60 processing fee required for this change. To further expedite the process, applicants can also opt for a $19.53 fee for 1-2 day delivery of the passport once it is printed.
