Planning a Trip to Japan? No Visa Required and Soon No COVID Restrictions Either

Traveling to Japan is about to become much easier as the country prepares to eliminate its remaining COVID-19 border measures. Starting on May 8, 2023, visitors will no longer need to show proof of vaccination or present a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival, as stated by Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
These changes coincide with Japan’s decision to reclassify COVID-19. Currently classified as a Class 2 virus (alongside diseases like tuberculosis and diphtheria), COVID-19 will be downgraded to Class 5 on May 8, 2023, which includes less severe illnesses like the common cold and seasonal flu.
A Gradual Reopening
Following the onset of the pandemic in 2020, Japan enforced some of the most stringent tourist restrictions and was slow to reopen to international travelers. The country began welcoming foreign tourists again in June 2022, but there were limits on visitor numbers, and arrivals were required to join government-approved tours, which faced criticism for their rigidity. During this time, obtaining a visa was necessary, although U.S. leisure travelers had previously been exempt from this requirement before the pandemic.
Japan No Longer Requires Travel Visas
As of October 2022, independent travelers could finally explore without supervision and without a visa. However, they were still required to present either a COVID-19 vaccination certificate (including at least one booster) or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before arrival—these measures will remain in effect until May 8, 2023.
