President Biden to Remove Many Travel Restrictions to Cuba
Significant changes are on the horizon for U.S. policy towards Cuba. Initially reported by the Miami Herald and McClatchy, and later confirmed by the Department of State, the Biden administration plans to reopen travel and trade with Cuba for Americans.
The policy updates are expected to include a substantial increase in flights between the United States and Cuba, facilitating more group travel, removing limits on money transfers to families in Cuba, and reinstating a family reunification program. Under former President Donald Trump, flights had been restricted to Havana, and most trade and tourism were prohibited.
While it seems that individual tourism to Cuba will still be restricted, Americans should soon have the opportunity to book group tours again.
These policy shifts come after an extensive review of Cuba relations and could pave the way for increased tourism and investment from Americans in Cuba.
The Trump administration aimed to halt the reopening to Cuba initiated by former President Barack Obama during his time in office.
Trump implemented regulations that prohibited many types of tours and banned trips from most ships. In 2019, the Trump administration also restricted commercial flights to Havana only, reversing the easing of Cuba-U.S. flight regulations that began under Obama.
We will provide more information on planning a visit to Cuba as it becomes available.
