The U.S. Consulate has issued a warning regarding travel to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.
Following the tragic shooting of two Canadian tourists at an upscale hotel in Playa del Carmen on January 21, and the recent murder of a bar manager at Mamita's Beach Club nearby, the U.S. Consulate General in Merida has alerted American citizens about safety concerns in the area.

(Photo courtesy of the hotel)"Due to recent incidents of violence and crime in popular tourist spots like Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, U.S. citizens are urged to exercise heightened caution while traveling in Quintana Roo," states the advisory on the U.S. Embassy and Consulate for Mexico's website. "Crime and violence can happen anywhere in the state, including tourist-frequented locations."
The advisory recommends that American travelers consider the following precautions:
- Stay updated by monitoring local news, heed guidance from local authorities, and in emergencies, dial 911.
- Steer clear of large crowds.
- Maintain awareness of your surroundings.
- Assess your personal safety strategies.
- Reach out to the U.S. Consulate or Embassy for assistance if needed.
The alert, published online on January 25, 2022, does not explicitly reference the shooting incident from January 21 at the Hotel Xcaret in Playa del Carmen, located approximately 45 miles south of Cancun. The shooting occurred near an outdoor dining area, prompting guests to seek safety.
According to the Quintana Roo state prosecutor's office, the two deceased men had criminal histories, including drug trafficking offenses, with reports indicating arrests made in connection with the case.
Situated on Mexico's Caribbean coast, Quintana Roo has typically been viewed as safe for tourists; however, several violent incidents tied to drug cartels have emerged in recent months. In October, two tourists were killed and three others injured in a shooting at a Tulum restaurant. In November, guests at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun in Puerto Morelos fled from gunfire during a beach shootout.
In response to these incidents, the Mexican government has stationed National Guard troops throughout the region to enhance security measures.
