From my vantage point on a dock in Sarandë, Albania, Corfu appeared tantalizingly close, almost within swimming distance. It looked like a paradise, with rolling green hills, vibrant blue waters, and historic structures lining the coast. During our 30-minute boat journey, I quickly realized it was no illusion; the Greek island truly is as breathtaking up close as it is from afar. As Sino points out, the beginning and end of this period might be especially appealing. “The best time to visit Corfu is from late spring to early autumn (May to September). The weather during these months is warm and sunny, making it perfect for beach activities and outdoor exploration,” Sino noted. “July and August attract the most tourists, so visiting in May, June, or September allows for a more peaceful experience with fewer crowds.”

How to Get There

By plane: Corfu International Airport (CFU) serves as the main entry point to the island, with daily flights available from major cities across Europe. Located just a short drive from Corfu Town, it’s a convenient start to your island adventure. 

By ferry: Regular ferry services connect the Greek mainland to Corfu, with frequent departures from Igoumenitsa and Patras. Additionally, there are international ferry routes from Italy that take between seven to 15 hours, depending on your departure point. An international ferry from Albania also connects to Corfu, taking less than 30 minutes. 

How to Get Around

By car: Corfu is quite large, making car rental the best way to explore the island. The roads are well-kept and easy to navigate, making this the top choice. Numerous local rental shops will gladly meet you at the ferry terminal or airport to provide your vehicle. (Note: While scooters and ATVs are available for rent, a car is more suitable given the island's size.) 

By public transit: If you prefer not to rent a car, Corfu boasts a reliable public bus system. It's incredibly budget-friendly (under $2 per ride) and takes the stress out of finding parking, especially useful when visiting Old Town.
