This Swiss mountain town boasts some of the finest skiing in Europe—here’s how to plan your perfect getaway.
There’s skiing, and then there’s skiing in the Swiss Alps. Experienced skiers and snowboarders dream of gliding down some of the best-groomed trails in Europe at breathtaking altitudes, and Verbier stands out as one of the most exhilarating destinations for this.
Nestled in the southwest corner of Switzerland, this alpine village is part of the 4 Vallées, which includes six resorts. The renowned ski area has long attracted avid riders to explore over 250 miles of interconnected trails.
Situated at approximately 5,000 feet, Verbier provides direct access to Mont-Fort, the region's highest summit. Here, you can ski or snowboard at 10,800 feet, enjoying sweeping views of Mont-Blanc and the Grand Combin massif. The primary resort of the 4 Vallées is renowned for its vast terrain, featuring some of the best backcountry skiing available.

It also highlights Verbier's après-ski scene as "a true institution that attracts a diverse clientele of all ages."
In the village, you'll discover everything from luxurious five-star hotels to quaint pubs and vibrant late-night venues. The dining options are exquisite, and the shopping is upscale. While a trip to Verbier can be quite costly, the splurge is justified to experience one of Europe’s largest and most coveted ski destinations.
Here’s everything you need to know for planning the ultimate winter getaway to Verbier.
Best Time to Visit
Image: Margarita Almpanezou/Getty ImagesThe ski season in Verbier typically begins in early to mid-November and runs until late April or early May. Be mindful of going too early in the season, as the resort is only open on weekends throughout November, with full operations starting in early December. The end of the season is often considered the ideal time for a ski trip, as temperatures rise above the 30s Fahrenheit and spring showers bring fresh powder to the slopes.
To escape the crowds at Verbier, avoid visiting during the holidays or in February, when students across Europe take their breaks and flock to ski resorts throughout the Alps. It's also wise to steer clear of Freeride week in January, which attracts thousands of competitive skiers and riders to Verbier. February, however, is often the most budget-friendly month to visit.

Skiing and Snowboarding Info
Jodie Wallis/Getty ImagesVerbier's altitude might seem daunting, with its peak reaching nearly 11,000 feet, but it's truly accessible for all skill levels. While opinions differ on the distribution of beginner, intermediate, and expert runs, it's generally agreed that about half are intermediate, with the remainder roughly split between beginners and experts.
Beginners should try areas like Les Esserts, the largest beginner zone in Verbier, featuring gentle slopes and the longest magic carpet in Switzerland. Le Rouge offers two slightly steeper slopes for those ready to advance, while La Chaux provides a bit more challenge at a higher elevation for novice skiers.
Expert skiers will definitely want to head to the summit of Mont Fort, the highest point, for more challenging runs and breathtaking panoramic vistas.
Programming
For those looking to improve rapidly, Verbier boasts numerous independent ski schools (none directly affiliated with the resort). Beyond skiing, there are other mountain activities, such as the world's highest zip line and the longest in the Alps. If you're traveling with little ones not ready for skiing, check out The Kid's Club at La Tzoumaz, part of the larger 4 Vallées area, which offers half- and full-day programs including lunch and engaging activities like games and crafts.
