Time Out reveals the world’s top cities for 2022

Edinburgh’s stunning skyline, which features an extinct volcano, a majestic hilltop castle, and centuries-old architecture, is just one of the many reasons the Scottish capital earned Time Out’s title of best city for 2022.

Every year, Time Out surveys around 20,000 city residents globally, along with its network of international editors, to discover what makes each city unique. The resulting insights are used to create the renowned Time Out Index and global city rankings.

Edinburgh’s beauty was not the only factor that secured its top spot in 2022. The city’s vibrant arts festivals, growing culinary scene, and pedestrian-friendly streets—coupled with its warm, inclusive atmosphere—won the praise of its residents in the survey.

While last year’s list focused on cities that showed resilience during the pandemic, this year, Time Out turns its attention to the experiences we’ve all missed, diving deep into the best restaurants, bars, nightlife, and museums in each city.

Resilience and revelry

Following closely behind Edinburgh at number two is Chicago, a Midwestern American powerhouse known for its vibrant late-night scene and its remarkable recovery after the pandemic. Medellín, Colombia, rounds out the top three, celebrated for its buzzing nightlife, chic boutique hotels, and mouth-watering cuisine.

Scotland makes a strong impression with Glasgow ranking at No. 4 on the list. Time Out highlights the city’s diverse dining scene and its welcoming atmosphere.

The rankings also take into account sustainability, safety, and public transportation. Glasgow’s SWG3 club, for example, has recently launched an innovative project to generate power from dancers’ body heat. Meanwhile, Amsterdam, ranked No. 5, is recognized as the world’s most bike-friendly city.
