UK Travel Restrictions: Countries Enforcing New Measures
In an effort to curb the spread of a rapidly transmitting coronavirus variant, multiple nations have placed travel bans and restrictions on arrivals from the United Kingdom.
The emergence of this new variant in the UK led to a Tier 4 lockdown in London and southeastern England, while additional restrictions were applied across the country during the holiday season.
Following the UK's lockdown announcement on Saturday, over 40 countries spanning Europe, Asia, South America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East have imposed travel restrictions on the UK, with some also targeting other countries where the variant has been identified.
This variant has been detected in Denmark, the Netherlands, and Australia, according to the World Health Organization. A different coronavirus variant has been reported in South Africa, as confirmed by WHO’s technical lead for Covid-19, Maria van Kerkhove, on Monday.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is offering assistance to British citizens affected by the travel disruptions caused by new restrictions, which have isolated UK travelers from much of Europe and other global destinations.
This decision follows New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's recent call for a travel ban from the UK or mandatory testing of passengers. Meanwhile, airlines including Delta, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic have agreed to implement a testing requirement for travelers flying between the UK and New York City.
US Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Brett Giroir told Dinogo that as of Monday morning, there were no immediate plans for US travel restrictions on the UK due to the new coronavirus variant, but he emphasized that all options remain on the table for discussion, with scientific consultation to guide the final decision.
The CDC is closely monitoring the situation and evaluating the potential impacts of the new variant, along with possible measures for international travel, as stated by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
