Which countries are currently open to US tourists – plus key resources for planning your trip

During the Covid-19 pandemic, US passport holders faced a constantly shifting list of international travel options and regulations.

The limited travel choices of spring and summer 2020 have evolved into near-global accessibility by 2022. Ultimately, it's your decision to determine if international travel is right for you.

Health risks are clear for those who aren't fully vaccinated. Travel venues and events may have their own restrictions. Countries could alter their regulations unexpectedly, even after you've made plans or are already on your journey.

The US State Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer country-specific risk assessments to assist with your travel decisions.

Important things to know before you travel

Below is a curated list of countries and territories, organized alphabetically by continent or region, where US passport holders can enter for leisure travel.

• Whether full vaccination is required for entry. Some destinations on this list only accept fully vaccinated Americans, while others have either relaxed or never imposed this requirement.

• Potential exceptions to certain rules for the fully vaccinated, individuals who have recently recovered from Covid-19, or children.

• Whether a negative Covid-19 test result is still required for entry, along with any health insurance mandates.

• What safety rating the CDC has assigned to the destination.

Sub-Saharan Africa

Africa presents an extensive range of travel opportunities – from outdoor adventures in various climates to diverse cultural and urban experiences. With 54 countries, each has its unique approach to handling the pandemic.

Countries in northern Africa fall under the Middle East and North Africa category listed further below.

Asia

Asian destinations have been slower to reopen to international travelers compared to other parts of the world. However, more and more locations are now welcoming American tourists for vacation.

Australia and the Pacific Islands

Similar to Asia, this region has proceeded with great caution in reopening. However, a few Pacific islands have started to allow US tourists, and now fully vaccinated Americans can also visit Australia.

Europe

As of late June, many European countries were classified by the CDC as 'Level 3: high risk' for Covid-19. Despite this, Europe still boasts some of the world's most coveted travel destinations.

Middle East / North Africa

The Middle East and North Africa are rich in history and culture, but like the rest of the world, these regions are also confronting the challenges of a modern-day pandemic.

South America's response to the pandemic has mirrored global trends with varying levels of openness. While Brazil has remained accessible throughout, Argentina only recently allowed entry for U.S. travelers.

Excluded destinations

This is a curated list, not an exhaustive directory of every country currently open to U.S. travelers.
