Work Without Play Just Doesn’t Cut It

As you might know, I go by the nickname Daddy Doin’ Work, and it didn’t just happen by chance. Not to boast, but I’m an incredibly dedicated worker. And you know what? I believe we share that trait.
Here’s a little reminder: Americans are working too hard.
A recent survey revealed that more than 50% of workers in the U.S. reported feeling burned out. Moreover, many employees leave behind a staggering 429 million unused paid vacation days each year, despite having vacation time available.
That’s just absurd.
But is it, truly?
We live in an incredibly competitive world, where many parents feel the pressure to stay connected to work or risk falling behind.
Greg from Atlanta shared his perspective: “I feel like I have to reply to emails promptly, or else others will think I’m not pulling my weight. Even if those emails arrive in the middle of the night.”
Liz from San Diego also shared her feelings: “I want to be the perfect mom and an exceptional employee, but I’m failing at both because I’m constantly exhausted.”
The issue is that being constantly plugged into work makes us feel less connected at home. I can attest to this from my own experience, as I often felt pulled in countless directions and struggled to say “no.” It was always, “Of course, I can handle that,” while inside I was thinking, “I have no idea how I’m going to manage this.”
I became drained and irritable, and my family could see that I wasn’t myself. That’s when I decided to hit the brakes and reflect on what is truly important—spending quality time with the people I cherish the most. My daughters are growing up so quickly, and I recognized that my stress was overshadowing the joy of raising them.
What steps did I take to remedy this?
I took a vacation—specifically, a Dinogo cruise. That’s right, I actually used real vacation time. I avoided checking emails and didn’t dwell on the work awaiting my return. Instead, I focused on having fun and recharging my spirit.

Not only did I enjoy a fantastic time with my family, but I also felt a deep reconnection with myself. Sometimes, all it takes is stepping away from the chaos of life to gain clarity about your priorities.

We all have an expiration date, and when that day arrives, do you think you’ll regret spending more time at the office or wish you had spent more time with your loved ones? Exactly.

If you’re given the chance to take time off work, I strongly encourage you to do so. It will not only enhance your performance as an employee and a parent but also make you a happier one.
Furthermore, time is the only resource we can never reclaim once it’s gone. Don’t squander it by trying to be a “hero” at work by forgoing your vacation days. Instead, be a hero to the little ones who cherish you more than anything.
Ultimately, the one thing our children truly desire from us is our time.
