Hotel reviewDuring our honeymoon we made a last minute reservation at Sang Poy Cottage whilst we were travelling the Mae Hong Son loop. We hadn’t got high expectations as we’d stayed at a “boutique” hotel the night before in Pai that was less “boutique” and more “budget”. This hotel, however, was on another level. We had a lovely welcome from the staff, and were shown up to a beautiful room. It is worth noting that we visited during off-season, with the smog of the burning fields, and the hotel was clearly making improvements ready for the lucky guests that will be visiting during peak-season. The room we were shown to was stunning. Amazing panoramic views over the Thai countryside, with a private balcony and hot tub. The aircon was a new model and worked wonderfully. And everything seemed to have been installed with quality and style. The high ceiling gives the rooms a feel of light and space, added to the huge windows and large, private outdoor space. We were only in the room a few minutes when we did discover a slight problem - bees were somehow managing to get into the room. Not something that can be helped immediately by the hotel and clearly a relatively new problem that they were unaware of, they have plenty of time to fix this problem before the peak season. Luckily the staff were incredibly helpful and swiftly relocated us to the room next door, which was identical and just as stunning. The rooms came equipped with a mini-fridge too so there was somewhere to keep our items cool. We decided to eat at the hotel, sat on their downstairs balcony admiring that stunning view - delightful even during burning season. I would love to see it during the peak season when the smog from the fires has cleared. There is a pond beneath the balcony with giant water lilies and bubbling fountains, which creates a lovely peaceful atmosphere- perfect after a hard day travelling and exploring the area. They appear to be creating a lovely covered walkway around the pond, which I think will look lovely when it is completed.When we ordered food we were warned there may be a wait, but we did not mind as we had nowhere else to be. And the food was delicious - definitely worth waiting for!After dinner we popped upstairs to spend a bit of time in our glorious hot tub, and found candles ready to be lit around the tub and a lighter thoughtfully left next to them. Three adorable little lizards were hanging out on our balcony with us, having a great time eating all the flying insects and we loved watching them scurrying around doing their thing.Time for bed arrived, and the bed was huge and comfortable - I got a great night sleep.When morning came the power was out. I absolutely panicked that we’d plugged something in and blown the hotel’s fuse - until my husband noted that the whole village was out, and the power was back on within 10 minutes of us waking anyway.Breakfast was just as good as dinner the night before. I’d had the saffron rice - it was sublime. And then it was time for us to leave. I’m sad we didn’t get to stay longer, but we will definitely be revisiting during peak season - this place is a gem and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a laid back stay after a long journey.

The accommodation is on the side of the road, easy to find, quiet, can walk to Chu Tong Pae Bridge. There is breakfast to choose from. The rooms have amenities for a comfortable sleep.

I'm a Bangkok city worker who dreams of the quintessential Thailand weekend escape, and I think I finally found it! Ran off for the long-weekend to Mae Hong Son in the north and stayed at the magical SangPoy Cottage. Newly-built but assembled from 100-year old teak wood fittings - paid the extra for one of the two spa suites that has a thermal spring water hot tub on the deck overlooking the fields to the monastery. Woke up early in the cool, fog morning to stroll down to the bamboo bridge to see the daily monk procession, and followed them back up to the monastery. So beautiful, so peaceful, so serene, so Thai! These are all my pics! Thought I had to share 🙂

In this hotel, morning and evening will bring different surprises

Loved the hotel, the room, the garden, and the location. But the restaurant could really improve. We ordered the "signature pork ribs", which did not seem freshly made and also were cold when served. Our breakfast, eggs benedict, were also cold, and the eggs were overcooked. Very bad quality for what's paid.Why try to serve a 'western' menu when Thai food is so damn good?!

Looking to book a beautiful stay in MHS? Look no further, with a fantastic view overlooking the rice field, huge balcony with nice spa jacuzzi and well decorated room. Not forgetting the nice delicious English breakfast too.
