Loved the experience! The onsen inside the pension is beautiful, we had the whole thing for ourselves for 2 nights and it was magical. The owners are really caring, the breakfast is challenging for western people like us, but an amazing experience nevertheless.

This nice little pension is run by an elderly couple who despite their age provide some of the best food and meals in the area. We have been in Japan for over 20!years and their meals were full of hide beef and the flavors of the okuhida area such as Hoba Miso, rich miso soup with mushrooms, and homemade Japanese pickles to an amazing handmade sesame tofu. The property has two onsen areas. The ‘indoor’ baths are a bit basic and need some atmosphere as well as hot water showers to clean yourself. The outdoor bath has separate changing areas but the bath itself is open to both sexes. Luckily the baths are easily used privately by asking or just simply locking the door. The baths are all open 24 hours which is a plus so no matter what you will always have a chance to enjoy the hot springs and have privacy. The rooms are nice and comfortable but only the larger rooms are good for those with large luggage as the smaller rooms are basically for sleeping and with beds. No real storage or room. The property also has communal toilet facilities separated by sex and a common sink area for getting ready I really hope this place keeps up and if anything to happen to the owners I do hope someone will continue their efforts.

The couple that runs the Ryokan are very nice. She was very quick with the tablet for translating. It is very close to a number of good hiking trails. The indoor and outdoor onsen were both well kept and clean. Highly recommend if you are looking for an opportunity to get out of the city!

We stayed here in 2016 and would love to come back. It's the perfect place for us - very quiet and peaceful. The hosts were wonderful. The food was amazing. Still dreaming about a special tofu dish that I've never had anywhere else.

I loved the almost 100 year old house; the owner is an artist and his beautiful paintings are throughout; there's also lovely furnishings and woodwork.  …

It was not easy to find the hotel. Many winding roads and also long tunnels during our drive from Fujikagawa. 3hrs. But this hotel is very pleasant. Western rooms. With some rooms with attached. …

Very nice people - your kind of aunt and oncle who's there to serve you =)Auntie served us great delicious food and the painter husband (who decorated the whole hotel with his artist friends) served us by car to bring us to the busstation in Hirayu Onsen and even further 🌟Their outdoor hotsprings showed us the BEST of japanese bathmyths :under the stars with the snowflakes falling we got heated by nature from the roots 💫👌The rooms are both traditional tatami and western beds. Excellent and highly recommended!!Hard to find the exact busstop on the internet to plan our trip without our car. We finally made it : Uejikage when coming from Hirayu Onsen, and the bus goes quite often during the day .

Exceptionally kind, very nice food, 24-hour onsen. Traditional, comfortable, a bit out of the way from Takayama but highly recommended. The highlight of our trip to Japan.

Nice old cupple who runs the place. Good for cupples but didn't feel so family friendly. If your a big meat lover they do serve a very good dinner there.
