5 Stars to the service and location. I think the staff are great and are always happy to help and friendly. In summary, recommended with the below notes and caveats. The rooms, and onsen are quite dated, and although clean do need a bit of love and a revamp. Our room had a somewhat dirty couch as well.Warning to light sleepers: the walls are thin and on the first evening we could hear the neighbours snoring, and generally moving around.Otherwise this was a bit of a mix of a charming Ryokan with facilities that feel somewhat 90s esque. The onsen itself are very clean, they provide shampoos, towelettes and other small amenities, but is generally unavailable from 9am till 3pm??The rooms furniture is a tiny bit scuffed and old, as are the floors, and the breakfast or meal area could do with a general spruce.I don't regret our stay at this Ryokan, but just note these points for improvement (also please let people book breakfast after 8am, couldn't relax getting up this early!).A big thank you to the staff and reception. The service was lovely, and we really appreciated you.

If you want a more classic Japanese hotel experience, we loved it. The hyper-friendly staff speak English, they give you kimonos in case you want to go out in Takayama in traditional dress... and sleep on the futons in a typical room, very exciting. They have a washer/dryer in the hotel itself, which is very convenient. They have private bathrooms in the hotel with reservation, and public bathrooms so that the experience is complete.
