I brought my elderly parents to eat matsutake mushrooms. The location, the quaint, historic room, and the hospitality were wonderful, and my parents were happy. When my parents visited 15 years ago, they said they sat on tatami mats, but this time they had chairs and a table. This was a blessing for my parents, who have weak legs. However, unfortunately, even though I ordered the matsutake mushroom gozen, the matsutake mushrooms were disappointing.Steamed in clay pots and then grilled in foil, but the mushrooms lacked the unique crunchiness and aroma that matsutake mushrooms have. It had a slightly spoiled smell and taste. Take the plungeWhen I asked which matsutake mushroom? The answer is that it is a domestic product that I bought at a market in Nagoya, but I don't know where it comes from.I went all the way to Nakatsugawa to eat matsutake mushrooms. If you couldn't get it, I would like you to let me know in advance. Moreover, why was the matsutake mushroom in the dish delicious? I think it was clearly different. However, the last matsutake mushroom rice wasI think it was before I asked because there was no texture or aroma of matsutake mushrooms. It was a shame because the other dishes were delicious.I stayed in Gero that day, and the next day I went to the farm in Kashimo, where there were lots of local matsutake mushrooms.I felt very sad. I bought this to make matsutake mushrooms at home and returned home.

It was amazing to stay in a 400-year old historical building and to explore the gardens. All the houses were beautiful and the dinner and breakfast was delicious and suited the season perfectly.

We came in search of tradition, and after traveling through the ancient Nakasendo, we were welcomed into this Ryokan... simply breathtaking! The house is more than 200 years old and welcomed Akihito, sliding walls opening onto a wild plant garden, traditional tatami mats, getas and yukatas at your disposal, an Onsen open to nature... culture shock guaranteed. What can we say about the meal... Mr. YOSHIDA is truly an artist, he is the 15th family generation to run this inn, speaks English very well (which is rare) and showed rare delicacy. Here you will find the soul supplement you are looking for!Yours sincerely,Eric and Peggy

I was so impressed when the food was brought to me! I was satisfied with the delicate taste. When I made the reservation, I requested a nice thatched roof and a nice terrace, but unfortunately that didn't come true! Too bad about the water! Next time, take a day trip!

What a joy to spend a night here! The rooms are traditional, large (you have the entire chalet to yourself, complete with modern bathroom). There is an onsen on the premises that overlooks the forest, tranquility guaranteed. The meals and service are impeccable. The host and staff - friendly. If you must explore the culture of this wonderful country and expect absolute luxury, visit here!

Nagataki was perhaps the highlight accom of our whole 2.5 week Japan journey in January 2024. It cost more than any of our other accommodation but it was worth it as our 2 nights here were so memorable. Our 200 year old traditional house was full of character with a beautiful view and so spacious and with modern bathroom - even had hosted a Japanese Emperor! We read some reviews that said it was cold but with the ample heaters on before we entered every day and hot water bottles delivered each evening for our warm comfy futons, we were so cosy and never cold despite wintery conditions outside. The included food by chef Maseyo was incredible- such skillful traditional sushi and dishes using local unique fruits, vegetables and fish and so ample (7-10 courses each breakfast and dinner!). And he created amazing creative vegetarian alternatives for me while my partner ate the full range and we both loved every dish - and the warm sake! Maseyo speaks excellent english and is descended from a long family line running this historical Ryokan hundreds of years. The woman who brought us most of our meals and helped show us how to wear our yukatas (belted up with a resounding “CHOTO!!”) was so lovely and had a great sense of humour. Such warm and genuine hospitality. We had the onsen set in the beautiful grounds and facing the forest all to ourselves and that was such an unmissable relaxing treat every morning. We could have happily stayed reading and relaxing in our room and soaking in the onsen the whole time, but we also really loved exploring the surrounding area with drop off and pick up to the train station by the accommodation and great suggestions for what to see from Maseyo. Perfect authentic place to begin (or end) walking the Nakasendo trail. We definitely will go back one day!
