This is a luxurious inn. Standing on the edge of a canal called Hachimanbori, we have created an inn that is integrated with the topography. The guest rooms are in a two-story wooden building, and the second floor is used only for breakfast. Although the old building is being rebuilt, it doesn't feel old. From one side, you can see the view of the moat through the glass, and on the other side, when you open the shoji screen, you can see a small Japanese garden. Since it was summer, mosquito coils were provided and we were allowed to go outside. At night, the sounds of insects, thunder, rain, and various other sounds will remind you of the countryside of the Showa era. The fact that it is sealed and not cut is quite innovative. You can also access the moat right away. After a short walk, you'll soon find yourself in a district of large shrines and traditional black-walled houses. I thought it was a very rare inn in that the whole thing was part of one big performance.

Style.200 years old tatami shop turned ryokanSetting.Incredible canal front hideout, embraced by nature, in a historical merchant townExplore.Time travel in Omi Hachiman. The past is just a hairpin bend away on the canal boatsRooms.2 options, was in 1033 sq ft Ki-no-ma 木の間 with view of the Hachiman Bori canal, the other option is the garden view 石の間 (Ishi No Ma) that comes with a stone bath.Check in was in the living room’s sunken nook by the super helpful Jun-san that reached out to me a week before my arrival. I was impressed by the gorgeous lush settings, views of the trees & canal on one side and a Japanese garden on the other side. My bathroom came with a huge cedar bathtub made by a craftsman who normally makes soy sauce barrels.@ the ryokan/ hotel. The house was built 1830 and also comes with a gallery, cafe, bar, and a sauna.Food & drinks.Restaurant 溜ル —— Had better food here than my Kyoto one Michelin star lunch on the same day. Sake pairings served using a variety of drinkware and the entire kaiseki was just a sizzling cooking showPrices.$743 including half board and alcohol. Worth splashing out forRating.5/5

It is located on the banks of Hachimanbori. It's very convenient as it's in the center of Omihachiman tourism and the bus stop is nearby. The staff were very responsive and I could feel their hospitality. Dinner is served in a calm space in a separate building, which is a warehouse. Dishes that carefully utilize carefully selected ingredients such as Omi beef and Omi vegetables have a special feel and are highly satisfying. The approach, rooms, and bathrooms are an old private house that has been renovated, so it is basically not barrier-free.

Staying here was an experience wrapped in silence and Japanese beauty that made you forget time. It was a space that perfectly blended the charm of an old folk house with modern comfort, making you forget about the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The beautiful garden view from the room freed us from the flow of time and allowed us to spend a peaceful time. In addition, the rock bath made from Kurama stone from Kyoto was a blissful relaxation experience that soothed both body and mind.Dinner was like a live cooking show. I was able to enjoy the deep passion and freshness of the ingredients, such as the grilled Omi beef that was cooked right in front of my eyes. In particular, the grilled Omi beef is a must-try dish. For breakfast, we started with sencha and pickled plums, followed by an array of simple and heartwarming dishes such as small side dishes of obanzai, grilled fish, and rice cooked in a clay pot. These experiences made me feel the traditional culture of Japan and the natural beauty of Shiga Prefecture, and were very special memories. The staff provided a special experience for each and every one of our guests with their attentive hospitality and consideration. Wakatsu is a highly recommended inn that perfectly combines Japanese tradition and modern comfort, allowing you to experience the depth of Japanese culture.

I visited with my family at the beginning of December. From the moment they picked me up to the last time I saw them off, everything was a wonderful memory.I stayed in a room with a Kurama stone bath. I went in with my son. Everywhere in the room, I was moved by how beautiful the details and people made me feel. The meals, both evening and morning, were truly lovely and hearty. In addition, the courteous service of all the staff made the inn an even more wonderful space. Thank you to the people in charge of customer service, the cook, and the owner.
