An exceptional experience from the moment you set foot at the entrance of this over 360 year old ryokan. The staff is incredibly attentive, and they went above and beyond to make our honeymoon stay special. We had a private onsen in our room and it was the best choice we could have made. Sitting in a hotspring bath with my husband, outside at night while it's quietly raining, watching the sulphur flowers and steam rise up was easily one of the top 3 experiences of my life. The rooms and little garden of our lodging was like pulled out of a fairytale, and the (two!!!) yukatas we selected to wear throughout our stay made everything that much more authentic. The dinner and breakfast were delicious and prepared and served with care. We felt transported in time, and pampered like never before. It's worth coming to Hakone even just to stay at Matsuzakaya Honten.

True meaning of luxury. Attentive, but unobtrusive service, peaceful and intimate location, spacious and stylish rooms in impeccable condition, soft and pleasant onsen water, haute cuisine - level dinner and breakfast. Well worth the money. I had a wonderful stay.

I stayed here for New Year's Day 🎍I think it was around 290,000 for two people. When I come to Hakone, I want to take a sulfur spring and there are many Yunohana ♡This is my second time staying here, and on New Year's Day we had mochi pounding and we all ate mochi (*^^*) The open-air bath in the room was great, but the private bath and changing area were clean, and there was also a shower room. Quality ◎We are a couple who loves to travel, so we stay here and there, but this inn has become our favorite as it is close to the Kanto region and we always stay at it every year. There are a lot of stairs, so if you have bad legs, you might not be able to do it💦 The other customers and the old lady seemed to have a hard time.

An incredible experience in this Ryokan. Welcome with tea and a small pastry. The staff is very friendly and helpful, speaks English correctly. The room was very large, the "bed" gigantic for two. Clean private onsen with a small room to change and wash before entering the bath, they explain everything and the discovery is easy. The multi-course meal is very good with some local and fresh products. Lounge area with unlimited drinks (even alcohol). The only downside is the location which limits travel when you don't have a car, but during the day you can quickly reach the lake.Totally worth the price and will do again on my next trip to Japan.

My husband and I had the most incredible experience at Matsuzakaya Honten Hotel. From the moment you arrive till you leave, the attention to detail is beautiful.🏨 The unsurpassed beauty of the property, the history of this place, the traditional hospitality, and beyond masterful kaiseki breakfast and dinners was wildly beyond my expectations.I am pretty particular about my accommodations, and we have stayed in many other 5 star hotels, and this hotels attention to detail and sincere hospitality, and VALUE for your money, really is an experience of a lifetime if you’re lucky enough to land on this property . They just celebrated their 360 years of service- simply amazing. If you are looking for beyond excellent culinary experience, traditional authentic onsen/Ryokan experience, and beautiful nature all around you, this is absolutely the place for you.We only had the time to stay here for 2 nights, and on our second day we walked to Moto Hakone where you can see Mount Fuji. You can either take a bus, or walk for 45 mins. We decided to walk, and it took our breath away as you enter into nature trails that are filled with streams and lakes. This place is incredibly special, and magical in every sense. Also, I was walking around outside, and a staff member from the neighbor hotel, lead me to the path behind the hotel where 5 poets would come and write poems 200 years ago. You can find their poems etched in stones. I had to go back up there a couple times and meditate and walk barefoot on this precious land. The entire staff is so present, kind and helpful in anything you might need.Thank you to the entire staff for all your help with our concierge needs. We are so grateful for the experience, we will never forget it! Also we will be back!! XxxOmote-ura nashi Arigato!

We had such an incredible stay at this ryokan! The service was impeccable, with such attention to detail and hospitality throughout our time there. Staying here felt like being transported in time, an absolutely authentic and unique experience. Best of all was the food: the meals we had here were some of the best we’ve had during our entire trip to Japan, and was the part of the day we most looked forward to. The menu was new each day for dinner and breakfast and filled with fresh, flavorful, local ingredients that were unlike anything we’d tasted before.Every member of the staff was super kind, polite, and they all spoke English. It was easy to get around Hakone and see all the sights from where we were located, but the area still felt secluded and private. Our stay was a 5-star experience and I would absolutely recommend Matsuzakaya Honten to any traveler in Hakone!

This was our favourite experience from our entire Japan trip. If you are visiting Hakone then I highly recommend staying here. It’s an absolutely gorgeous property with a truly authentic feel. We enjoyed every single aspect - the gorgeous room, exquisite dining experience and the private onsens. Every single member of staff were lovely and attentive, ensuring you had the best possible stay. Well worth the money if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford it. It’s only a 5 minute walk from one of the bus stops although give yourself plenty of time to get back to the station in the morning as traffic can be bad (it took us over an hour).
