Beautiful small hotel in traditional style. Almost everything is made of wood. The neighborhood is authentic, a residential area with low houses and nice small-scale restaurants. The silence is striking: you hear no major road or track. Occasionally a moped.

Great floor heating which keeps the room warm without drying out the air. Comes with fantastic toilets. Location is great as well, in a nice quiet neighbourhood and comes with great coffee.The garden in the room which should be the highlight was not well taken care off, in fact there was a hose lying in the middle of the garden which I was disappointed by given that we booked the room to have a nice garden view.Room and beds itself were comfortable, however would recommend this for a max of 2 adults and 1 child. We were a family of 3 adults and the room did feel like a little squeeze.Location is perfect, close to many bus stops and within 800m walk, there is train station that has lines straight to Osaka. Gion is also just a few bus stops away.Overall, good stay but would not recommend if you would like to cook during the holiday ( special diets ) as there is no space to do so.

The garden view suite was outstanding, large, with a nice view and gorgeous design. I'm giving out 4/5 because we were promised to have a washing machine in the room which we didn't have. Also, there were no clear instructions on how to use the bath. Not a big detail but that'd have made the stay perfect.

Absolutely gorgeous room, representing traditional tatami style. Attentive service. Flawless room facilities including heated floors. Centrally located without a single street noise to be heard. Do me a favor and try the garden suite room.

The room is next to the road, you can hear any noise from outside. The position of beds are terrible, the light will on your face in the morning. The gate of the building is sharing the wall with room, so you can hear the door closing on anyone going in or out, it is a loud knock noise. The air conditioner in the room is noise as well, hard to sleep at night. We called reception, and they said that they cannot help us and we need to contact other machiya (chain hotel)(Machiya Inns & Hotels) by ourselves if we want to change the room. For anyone who is considering staying in this machiya, please ensure you will not live in room 101.

Since I was traveling with a 0-year-old child, I was looking for a place to stay that had a Japanese-style room, futon, and a bathroom with a washing area, and I found this inn.About 10 minutes by bus from Kyoto Station. It's a short walk from there in a quiet residential area.There is a convenience store on the street about 5 minutes from the hotel, so there is no inconvenience.Stayed in a Japanese garden suite room.The rooms and water areas are very clean and you can let your children play without worrying.The bathtub was spacious and had a reheating function, so I was able to warm up with just the right amount of water.The greenery in the garden has a nice atmosphere, and it felt nice to open the screen door in the morning to let in the breeze. (There were no insects either!)We walked from the hotel to Kiyomizu-dera Temple and several other shrines.There are food shops on the street, but there aren't many compared to the area around Kyoto Station, so I researched them beforehand, took out dinner, and ate it slowly in my room.Since I was traveling with children, it was helpful to be considerate of the check-in time.Although I didn't have the opportunity to travel due to the coronavirus pandemic, I was able to find a good accommodation and have a great time. thank you very much.

We had a very poor experience at the Machiya. The check-in counter is near Kyoto station, but the houses and hotels are scattered throughout the city. Ours was a bus ride and long walk away. When we arrived at our room we found it was not the one we booked (suite with a garden) but a smaller, darker room with a very small bathroom and no counter. The sink and bathtub shared a single faucet. We called the front desk to help change the room and they referred us to their reservation team, who emailed us the next day that nothing was available. We ended up booking another hotel for the last night with no refund from Machiya, and when we asked for their help arranging a taxi they said the taxi situation was "chaotic" and we needed to order one ourselves. So on each count - the room, the service, and the location, we were uniquely disappointed.

I haven’t been overly impressed with this hotel – primarily the service. The room was nice. Location was ok.The check-in experience wasn’t great. They told me that no one would be here if I arrived after 7pm and would have to do self check-in. I arrived at 6.40pm and still no one was here. I had to ring from a phone on the wall and wait a while for someone to answer and give me instructions to get into the room and explain the hotel details.The room was nice, though very small with no space for a suitcase. The bathroom was one of those plastic corner ones you often see in cities in Japan. The wifi wasn’t good – it was a weak connection and dropped out regularly. The dehumidifier didn’t work, so I sent an email which over 24 hours later still no one has replied to.We wanted to leave our luggage with the hotel for a few hours after check-out, a common service at hotels and hostels. When I rang the number, the person who answered simply didn’t understand what I was trying to achieve and kept offering a delivery service. They asked me to send an email so they could translate it. The person assured me they would answer tonight but they still haven’t, and I’m not expecting them to.Also they told me there was an indoor phone to contact management with but it never materialised, so I had to go downstairs and stand outside every time I wanted to speak to them.If I’d realised this was a hotel where no staff ever appear and they are unable to help with fairly basic questions when you need them, I wouldn’t have booked it.All in all I don’t think it was really worth the price and can only imagine the top reviews here are based purely on the design of the hotel, which is admittedly impressive.

I used it in June.Located in a quiet residential area, close to the Gion area and close to the bus stop, it is easily accessible!Check-in was near Kyoto Station, and you could leave your luggage there, which was very helpful.It is very easy to understand how to get to the check-in counter as they have posted photos.The staff at the counter were also very kind and gave us easy-to-understand explanations such as the map and how to unlock the door!The room was a calm Japanese-style room with a courtyard, and the outside light came in during the day, making it a very nice room.The toilet and bath were new and comfortable.The bath has a hot water system, a coffee maker, original coffee, a refrigerator, and a humidifier.There are plates and a toaster in the common area of the entrance hall, so I was allowed to use those as well!It was built with several rooms, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, only one room was open, so we had a relaxing time.I would like to use it again when I go to Kyoto!

Check-in occurs at a different building, a 20min walk away, which is not ideal.Otherwise, everything was very nice.Location is great if you're like me and enjoy walking. There's a few nice cafes and conbini nearby, and the area itself is quiet. Room was clean, has heated floors, and the bath is modern with reheat/scheduling functions perfect for mornings. Check-out is a bit early at 10am, but the stay itself was nothing but pleasant.
