Such lovely people but so crowded. Very interesting and safe but best to get out of the big cities if you can. Because of the crowds I won’t be returning but it certainly was an experience to remember. Very friendly and caring people always willing to help.

If conditions permit, it is more convenient to take a taxi. The staff are very friendly and will actively help carry luggage and provide refreshments while waiting. The rooms are also very comfortable and beautiful.

The absolutely most amazing place I have ever spent the night in. The space itself has been renovated just enough to contemporize it to today's standards. Any more and it would take away from how beautiful and rooted the space is. As with many places in Japan - no detail has been left aside. However, Genhouin has taken the time to think each detail through in such a cohesive manner. You are gently greeted with a wind chime as you wisp through the front curtains into the lovely rock garden. You are asked to check-in from their dining room - a lovely space with floor to ceiling windows as you are served hot tea and a snack. The common spaces are so gentle and thoughtful it actually transforms your thoughts and actions in the same manner.A private bath can be reserved, which we did. It was the perfect end to our first day in Kyoto as it was quite chilly outside and prepared us well for dinner. Our particular room had sliding doors that lead to an enclosed patio, again, with floor to ceiling windows that lead to an amazing view of the garden. The breakfast there (we were served a Kyoto-style vegetarian breakfast) was actually the best meal I had in our two week trip. Much like the space - it was subtle and well thought out.The staff there are unmatched to any place I have ever been. Always attentive, but never intrusive. A great example of this is when you would take off your shoes and put on slippers to move around the common space, you would always return to find your shoes facing the direction they needed to face to seamlessly put them back on. We asked them to help us decide a place to eat (we just wanted some no-fuss sushi) and a member of the staff booked the place and walked us to the restaurant, with amazing conversation. This also ended up being one of our favorite meals in Japan and I am pretty sure the restaurant would have said "Sorry - we are full" if we tried to go there ourselves. That place has been designed for all 5 of your senses and what happens is that everything synergizes into a magical experience. If you are in Kyoto and are up for an experience I would definitely book Genhouin!Tiger! If you see this and you ever come to LA - give us a text. Would love to show you around!
