The Hanaya is a ryokan that opened three generations ago in a Kyoto machiya that is over a hundred years old. The current owners have renovated it to return it to the originally layout and materials. The rooms are beautifully simple, the gardens lovely. But iit now also an upgraded bath and other facilities as well as wifi and (thank heavens, given how hot Kyoto is right now), air conditioning. The breakfast that is part of the standard plan is delicious. One day, iit included homemade tofu—amazing. Dinner is an add on—classic kaiseki cuisine, delightful in its variety. The hospitality was understated but sincerely friendly and kind.

This is a very quaint three-story wooden inn that was built over 100 years ago, and it is a very quiet building. However, the Kiyamachi Street at the back facing the Takasegawa River is busy with people passing by at night, and cleaning companies are busy in the early morning, which is an unexpected situation. If you always sleep in a quiet environment, we recommend taking measures such as earplugs. However, the Hitotoki breakfast has a special atmosphere, with a view of the Takasegawa River from the former tea room, and the Kyo Obanzai prepared by the proprietress using ingredients from a long-established tofu shop in the neighborhood.

Very convenient location in Shijo. A small inn. For me, who usually live in a Western-style room with a bed, sleeping on tatami mats, futons, and yukata was new and very comfortable. The breakfast served in your room along the Takase River is both great in terms of atmosphere and content. I had a great time talking with the kind landlady. The prices are also reasonable. I didn't even receive a gratuity.

Although it is quite old and has some inconveniences, such as having a curfew, you can enjoy the atmosphere of traveling. It's also nice that it's very close to Shijo Kawaramachi.

I've been using this place for about 20 years, and to put it simply, it's a conscientious Kyoto inn. It's an old-style inn along the river, located in the center of Shijo, and the landlady is kind. …
