The sweetest couple run this authentic japanese guest house in a wonderful, quiet area of Takayama - only 10 min walk from the old town. Kenichi and his wife were so welcoming and helpful- they gave us lots of advice and suggestions and brought us breakfast every morning. When we asked for extra kitchen equipment they readily brought it. I would highly recommend staying here. The perfect base for exploring the surrounding area. It was very cold when we stayed in Takayama (3degrees outside ) so it was a little cold in this old house but they bought us extra blankets and the kerosene heaters heat up the room very quickly . Thank you so much

Guest house Maago was the perfect retreat in Takayama. I had an entire guest house to myself, but it didn't feel like it was too much. Kenichi-san greeted me outside upon arrival and welcomed me in. After a quick home tour, I was immediately made sure I knew where we were located. He told me about things to do nearby and gave me the inside scoop on the best places to eat. The house sits on a stream that runs right next to the building, so if you open the windows, you can enjoy the peaceful sound of the flowing water. I was greeted with a simple, delicious breakfast each morning. The house is very clean, has a laundry machine, and is nearby many excellent things to do. I didn't need to catch a bus the whole time I was there. The kitchen is not really set up to cook, so I'd advise you to eat all your meals out. I would definitely return if I visit Takayama again.

Kenitchi San & Chichako San are the best hosts, very kind, helpful and always wanting to make the stay of their guests to be comfortable & enjoyable. The guesthouse is well located, about 10 mins walk to all the touristic sites & restaurants of Takayama. 7 mins to the family mart super market. Their house is clean, spacious enough & well equipped for a family of 4-5 or even 4-5 adults. Nice breeze from the canal and nice garden & a small children’s play area near by. One of the best guesthouse we have stayed in during our stay in Japan

Mr. Kenichi was a great host! The house, a traditional japanese house of two floors, is perfect, clean and the tatami is very comfortable. He provided everything we need and gave good recommendation on places to see. The location is perfect, near all the must see places. Wonderful experience!

We can't say enough about how nice it was to stay with Kenichi at Guesthouse Maago. The guesthouse has three connected rooms upstairs - 2 tatami room with comfy futons on the floor, and one room with bunk beds.  …

The kind owner and his wife gave us a lot of advanced information on sightseeing in Takayama, and we had a great time walking around the town. This little-known Takayama ramen shop is the best.
