It was a really special place to stay for a few nights.
The service and ambiance were exceptional. We managed to take a farm tour with Chef Masa which was fantastic and informative and we experienced the restaurant with the set menu and also A La Carte. Both delicious.

if you love arts, architecture, nature, design and appreciate connecting with the local staff instead of starring at your smart phones - pls come here. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay which was easy breeazy just like Karuizawa itself. The 3 houses are both amazing as you'd get to hear on the architecture tour. We stayed at SSH No.2 and it was my personal favorite given the grand open space and direct link to nature every morning by the breakfast at the balcony as well as the sky walk. The whisky tasting was fun and informative and was held just behind the bar. The morning waterfall hike was breathtaking and also extra special because it's a rather local hike as opposed to the tourisy one. But what made the whole stay extra special was the staff, even before arrival, they helped us with arranging transport logistics and arranged tours to the best of their availability. We were taken care of by Mr. Ryotaro Nagoya a lot of the times and it was a treat - hearing the stories of the houses, the neighborhood, the local customs and he's a GREAT photographer! :) Really recommend a stay here to just relax and reconnect with your senses. Look forward to another stay in the near future <3

- Beautiful architecture and design. For someone keen on architecture it’s a great stay to enjoy the different buildings as well as some of the furnitures.- Great selection of art work. Owner must really want to guests to fully immerse and enjoy the artwork: some of them are even from Zao Wu Ki and Hiroshi sugimoto which is really impressive.- Nice breakfast. Two sets of choices: western and Japanese. I chose the Japanese for two days in a row: the rice with local mushroom is beautifully cooked. Tastes amazing.- We did the whiskey tasting, the architecture tour, and the waterfall trip. Staff are all so nice and attentive: we especially want to mention Ryotaro Nagoya. He explains the architecture so well and also a great guide to the waterfall.And even when they have a chef’s retreat going on when they have a big group to take care of, we still feel home.Amazing memories. We will come back again.

We really enjoyed our stay at Shishi Iwa House! It’s not a typical 5-star hotel, it’s a design hotel that would be interesting for people who are into art and architecture. Their dinner course was amazing, highly recommend!

The exterior of the hotel and the design of the rooms were nice, but I was very disappointed in the following points.▪️When I checked in, I was asked if there was anything I couldn't eat for breakfast the next morning, and I told them that I could be pregnant and couldn't eat living things. However, the restaurant staff were not receiving that share at all.▪️I asked for decaf coffee, sugar and milk for my after-meal coffee, but the sugar and milk didn't come with it, and I was told, "It's an Americano," and was offered the coffee. I wondered if it was really decaf.▪️The breakfast menu says "buffalo mozzarella", and when I looked it up online, I found that it was safe for pregnant women to eat, so when I told the staff that I could eat this cheese, they answered, "Actually, it's not mozzarella, it's Gruyère cheese. ” was said. I was surprised that what was written on the menu was different from the reality.▪️The free wifi did not connect at all from check-in to check-out.▪️The walls in the guest room were thin and I couldn't sleep because of the voices of people passing by in the next room or in the hallway.

SSH is beautifully designed but the differentiating factor really is the service. Nodoka-san was extremely warm and helpful. We are on a road trip around central Japan and are visiting amid typhoon season. We had to make alternative plans for subsequent hotel bookings and Nodoka-san helped to contact them to make arrangements. Thank you so much SSH for your hospitality.
