Toemu Nozawa Lodge

Thank you for your help for two days.The inside of the building is spacious and clean, the dining room and dry room are large and easy to use, and the rooms are simple but quiet and relaxing.It's close to the public baths, town bra, and ski slopes, so I think there are many ways to stay.I'll go visit again.

We had booked our accommodation at TOEMU Nozawa months ahead using previous favourable reviews as guides …. Then just prior to arrival early Feb this year, we noticed some not so favourable reviews !!! Some trepidation as to what we would find … BUT …. either the recent reviewers were staying somewhere else … or were not alert to clear advice /instructions upon check in …. or just had unreasonable expectations….. we were VERY happy with the conditions and service provided . Breakfast choices were more than sufficient to cover Westerners’ expectations…. also a limited choice for Japanese style breakfast… see the photos provided!!! … Breakfast is clearly signposted as being between 7AM - 8.30AM …we usually went to breakfast at 7AM … however I quietly observed during one of my rest days that a full hot selection was still available at 8.15AM and that the hot main course choices were NOT removed until 8.30AM . The croissants & other pastries ( in a warming cabinet ) remained longer. We experienced 7 breakfasts !!! All VERY acceptable !!!Onsen on site / clearly advised that the onsen hot water was available from 4PM - 11PM …. so if you wanted an onsen experience outside of these hours, walk to one of the public onsens … one VERY close !!!We paid extra for a room with our own toilet … also came with a shower over a deep 1/2 tub … the hot water was available to our ensuite 24 hr per day …. we were on level 3 & sometimes we had to let the water run for a few minutes before the hot water reached us … but when it did , it was definitely HOT !!! NO cold showers for us at all !!! The in house onsen was clean ….I can only comment that if ever there was body grime on the onsen tiles ( I didn’t see any) then perhaps western guests didn’t understand that you thoroughly wash your body & rinse off BEFORE entering the hot pool . Be aware that the on-site onsen does not appear to be fed by the local hot spring water that the public onsens are serviced by . … just hot water … but this is the same in several other accommodation choices .Room privacy …. we were fortunate to have room 303 which only had one common wall with other rooms …. & Yes, it was possible to hear VERY clearly the other (first) couple’s conversation … but didn’t experience this with subsequent guests … I think that first couple would have been shocked to know their voice volume was loud … or perhaps it is a cultural observation that some Australians are NOT used to … Room 303 was above the male’s onsen & therefore we didn’t experience any noise problems from below.The staff were always very helpful .Public Onsen supplies plus bathroom supplies …. ALL available at no cost … again just be observant .We have been to Japan snow fields several times … this is the first time staying at TOEMU …. We’ll be MORE than happy to book here again particularly IF we can secure Room 303 … had an excellent view of the ski fields above Nagasaka gondola line .Hint, if possible , wear day boots to/from gondola station & carry your ski boots … your feet will thank you!!! I then carried my day boots in a knapsack but there are lockers available 300Yen per opening /locking of locker at the Nagasaka Centre ( next to gondola)

Such a wonderful experience!We came to Toemu to snowboard and see the town. Our stay was comfortable and exactly what we expected when we booked a ryokan style hotel.The hotel has nice amenities like the drying room for ski equipment, breakfast room (delicious essentials like toast, rice, miso, eggs, sausage, carbs), and the bath. The bath is relaxing after a long day of skiing, be sure to ask the staff on what time they are cleaning the bath! Otherwise it’s perfect for the morning or post-skiing.The staff are accommodating and very friendly. They are happy to set up rides to the train station or help you with the facilities.If you are looking for a traditional ryokan style hotel, stay here!

I was looking for an inn with a parking lot in Nozawa Onsen and found this place.It was very comfortable with good access to both the hot spring town and the ski resort.The staff were all very kind and I would like to use them again when I come to Nozawa Onsen again.

The hotel staff were incredibly friendly and insightful! The space was really cosy and the rooms were quite spacious as well — even with four of us! It’s a short walk to the nearest onsen but there’s a lovely shower and hot bath facility on site too.We’ll definitely be back again! :)

There are so many layers of disappointment it is hard to know where to start with this review. Was it the ambivalent staff, the constant thundering of other patrons stomps vibrating through the building, or the general unhygienic nature of the mouldy bathing facilities that made this my most unpleasant stay in Japan?The staff although nice, seem to have no conviction or real ability to make decisions. To be honest it feels like a backpackers run by a group of teenagers, with no one to talk to with any kind of authority.The rooms (our room) was a traditional Japanese style room, with futons. I have stayed in similar style rooms many times before. During our stay, no room cleaning was provided, no turn down of bed. The futons we thin and low quality, as was the duvet. The Basin had a big hairline crack through it, and the wardrobe doors had water stains.There is almost no sound insulation in this building. I could here there murmurs of our neighbours conversations through the night, the thuds of footsteps on the hallways, and the banging of shoji screens opening and closing in the morning. It was very hard to relax in our private room with the constant noise.On to the bathing facilities. The communal facilities were well below acceptable. My first shower was cold, the bath was also cold. Although my next showers had hot water, the bath was now half empty and lukewarm. You could see the grime on the tiles and mould on parts of the bathroom floor. It smelt. I enjoy to onsen. This was not a enjoyable experience.Most Japanese hotels or inns provide amenities (razors, toothbrush hairbrush). These were not provided. But it was ok, I found the vending machine next to the bath where you could purchase them. I got my 300¥, but then realised the whole vending machine was sold out. I assume they don’t keep it stocked.Over all it was a very unenjoyable stay, and I would wait to leave. For AU$250 a night, this was completely unacceptable. If I paid AU$40 a night I probably wouldn’t have complained.Do yourself a favour… stay clear

This hotel is literally the worst place I’ve ever stayed. The common bathroom facilities were diabolical - the onsen/bath was never full or hot and generally smelt of a combination of warmed up body odor and mould.We had to sort our own garbage which was first for me. The bedroom was never tidied or refreshed during our stay and the breakfast was inedible.Beds/futons were easily the most uncomfortable during our 4 week trip in Japan.Perhaps the worst aspect of our stay was the noise though - we could literally hear every single movement from the adjacent rooms.This place is an absolute disaster - DO NOT BOOK HERE.If possible I would give 0/10

Too expensive for what you get. Rooms are okay but everything else is kinda basic. The shower room is as cold as outside and the Onsen pool wasn't being filled. The breakfast is really sad. Seems like it has seen better days but as of 2022 there's plenty of better options in Nozawa for similar price.

The friendly staff and close location to the slopes were the only positives of our stay. All the common areas were really cold and unusable, to the point where people were wearing their coats (including during breakfast). There was a smell of burnt petrol in the whole hotel coming from the drying room which made all my skiing gear reek of petrol. The worst part was the shower room which was freezing cold because the onsen (which is supposed to warm it up) was not turned on. Someone even had the great idea to put open the shower room door to let the cold inside a bit more. The included breakfast buffet was pretty sad, consisting of instant miso and sugary toast. All of it while paying a premium for booking during Xmas even though it seemed to be at half capacity
