Getting married in MeerlandUnfortunately, we had to realize bitterly that the family who owned it gave us the feeling that we weren't passionate hosts. We asked Meerland in good time (more than 12 months in advance) whether the hotel would be able to host a celebration with around 30 guests, as our wedding ceremony would take place at the lighthouse. This was confirmed to us.We met on site to get to know each other and agreed on a rough price for accommodation and entertainment, with the note that this could of course change slightly - depending on how inflation / food prices change. So we booked.Unfortunately, at this point it was still unclear what would happen to VAT in the catering industry. For us, however, all price fluctuations are calculable. We also agreed on a date for a rehearsal dinner about nine months in advance to discuss everything once again. This took place and it was still said that our wishes had to be implemented. The first nasty surprise came about 5 months before the planned celebration:The first price quoted had more than doubled, even though inflation had fallen and food prices remained stable, with a slight downward trend. However, the price now offered is only a guideline and can change at any time.Yes - the VAT has been increased, but as far as we know not by 100%, but by 12%.In addition, the reduction in their time was a relief for the restaurateurs in order to compensate for corona-related failures and very few restaurateurs probably passed this reduction on to their guests. In addition, the Meerland suddenly no longer had any catering facilities and they had to organize this especially for us and hire staff (a cook). The hotel advised us to find a caterer because the Meerland team could no longer provide catering due to the lack of staff. We also found a caterer who was willing to host our celebration at the hotel.Excitingly, he told us that the hotel had already asked him whether he could hold the catering, which he replied in the affirmative and made an offer to the hotel, which was around a third of the Meerland price offered to us. He presented this offer to us.We are aware that a location may add a “corkage fee” to an offer from a caterer, even though we did not have a hall rental as originally agreed. However, charging more than 100% even though you do NOT provide any service seems questionable to us.However, when he heard the price Meerland was offering us, the caterer said he would like to get to know the Komorowski family before making a final commitment.About 4 months before the planned wedding came the next bad news:The caterer canceled us after meeting the Komorowski family. It's still a mystery to us why the Meerland apparently turned against us, even though we had found someone to get the cow off the ice for everyone involved and we also agreed on the price with the caterer. We would have liked a passionate host to have an attitude with the mentality “we will do our best to give you a nice day and get it all done together” and not “it won’t work, see how you get along”.We ended up spending the night there with the company. However, over the three days we heard loud arguments among the staff, which as hosts of a wedding could perhaps have been resolved more charmingly - for example, not in the presence of the guest. We had definitely hoped for something different when planning the most beautiful day of our lives and would never plan such a celebration with the Meerland team again.Luckily we found a location on the island that allowed us to have a perfectly successful celebration without any problems. We think it's understandable that we won't see this hotel again.
