Great cinema! In 2014 I “moved” from the Rhineland to the Rheingau and roamed the entire wine region for several months - looking for “my” Riesling. It should be low in acid; that was difficult. After countless small and large producers, including the “good addresses”, I came across the Querbach winery in Oestrich-Winkel. A person couldn't be luckier when it comes to Riesling. I was rewarded with such wonderful taste experiences. Querbach's know-how and his special production method deliver fantastic and low-acid Rieslings, but also absolutely great Pinot Noir! This is and remains my address.

Peter Querbach is a person who probably not many people would like at first glance. The massive appearance, usually wrapped in a hunter's vest, may play its part. Above all, you can practically never expect what to expect from the taciturn, real-life Wingertsknorz.You go to the wine tasting and, against all conventions, the first thing Peter puts on the table is his top wine, the Milestone from Dosberg. Of course everyone is enthusiastic about the divine substance, but then they wonder how far the other wines will compare to it. Answer: Not at all! They are different, differentiated by the master in structure and character, but always precise, clean and incredibly drinkable.Querbach is an oddball and he doesn't care about the fuss that the wine world makes about technology, expansion, fashions and marketing. He makes wine! Just as it has always done: spontaneously fermented, traditional and, by today's standards, at the upper end of the dry scale. Instead of a cork, he puts a crown cork on the bottles and thereby ensures that his wines mature very slowly and extremely advantageously.You can easily see for yourself, because you can also buy many mature wines online from the winery at a price that the years have passed without leaving a mark. However, you shouldn't be surprised if Mister Q sends a few dry lines through the airwaves after ordering and refuses to release the desired vintages. “Better take this one and this one, they are much better at the moment!” Who can argue with that?!And so, in a convivial atmosphere with uninformed friends, you pop open one bottle after the other of your 2016 bottle, which would probably pass for a large plant elsewhere. The crowd is excited and always wants more!Or you open a bottle of Edition with a Barolo winemaker, have him guess the age and be amused that he is only about 20 years off with the “2-3 years” analysis. His face: priceless!And finally, in the illustrious wine group with journalists, winemakers and officials, you give a Dosberg 2002 (a generally bad year!) to the blind tasting and wait with a smile to see what happens: silence, astonishment, enjoyment, respect, curiosity, it's all there. But when you uncover the bottle, everyone's reactions are the same: That's from Querbach??? He can do something like that? So, that's it... really... I wouldn't have thought that!That's what happens when people only follow what they think is the mainstream. You're missing out on the best part! Therefore: Don't ignore the gruff, lateral thinker from Oestrich-Winkel and drink your boring, primary-fruited Rieslings until they get to you. I prefer to stick to difficult but lovable crazy people like Peter Querbach who know how to do their own thing - especially when that thing is really good wine!Is there anything I miss about Querbach? I would like to drink a Pinot Noir from him that would knock my socks off...
