looks like two (or more) separate buildings, so trying to align the lifts and stairways was a bit confusing. It's old and tired and could definitely use a thorough cleaning, but the service was pretty good.  …

Lovely hotel in a fantasy location. My room was good and well suited for my business trip, however; the TV didn't have a signal and the upright fab was intermittently working. The room was clean and tidy and the bed very comfortable with a stable and fast internet connection. I will definitely stay here when I'm next in Southampton. There is limited car parking at the hotel in a first come, first served basis - this is and extra £6 per night. The dining area was clean and spacious, the breakfast was very good for the £8.95 charge. Overall I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Start hotel.

Great location for this historic hotel. It is a bit quirky and not the ritz but it has charm and the staff is great. We arrived and the manager was hustling to serve tea and biscuits to customers waiting for rooms. …

Location was good, right near the high street and an easy enough walk to the docks if needed. Check in/out was easy enough, the staff did what was needed. Breakfast was basic but nice, and service was friendly. …

This hotel is located very conveniently for both the city centre and the Ocean cruise terminal. It’s an old building which is a bit tired in some respects but full of character. …

Location and staff were great, parking onsite at £6 for the day is fantastic. Rooms were a bit of a let down, finding a previous occupants unopened box of condoms was.....Nice?! Unfortunately noise from outside the room and the fact the curtains are thin and don't keep out the light made for a restless nights sleep. Finally the room was so so hot, so also had to sleep with the window open which didn't help with blocking out noise.

I booked two rooms Nos 60 and 55, neither had enough cold running water, the TV didn't work in the double room and when the maintenance man came he wasn't bothered about the water pressure and made some excuse about the number of people in …

When joining a cruise in Southampton we always stay at the Star Hotel for a few nights both before and after our voyage. As always we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and it was a great pleasure to once again meet all the delightful staff members we have got to know over the years. Have already booked for 2025.
