A warm pleasent welcome to a historic building. Recently taken over and under refurbishment.(as I understand things) The kitchens were closed on our visit, apart from breakfast. This is a very atmospheric environment with a knight in shining armor to greet you on the stairs. We enjoyed our short visit as we explored beautiful Devon by car and on foot

We stayed at this 12th century Hotel for valentines. We stayed two nights and really enjoyed it. Loved it and all its character and oldness. If you like modern places then this isn't the place for you. The breakfast was lovely and the lady serving breakfast was also very nice. Will definitely be staying here again

Staff very pleasant however no evening food due to not having a chef. The four poster bed was squeezed into a tiny room very uncomfortable and creaky. Breakfast was fun. We were asked what time we would like it. Informed them 8.30am. Coming down we could not smell breakfast cooking. Well no one was around. A lovely older lady came and saw 4 couples already sat waiting. She thought we were either early or she was late. Took our orders for coffee. Coffee tepid not hot. We spoke another couple who had been there a few days and stated it could be up to an hour before breakfast is served. We decided to leave without breakfast 15 minutes later. As we handed in the key the lady was on the phone asking if anyone was coming in to help with breakfast!! The querky Hotel could be amazing if only they had the staff!!

I love this place, narrow lanes to get to it but it's worth the drive. It is a very old and very haunted hotel, restaurant and bar. It's full of amazing historical objects that make you want to explore. They also offer a great selection of drinks at a reasonable price. Sitting outside is created to make your stay very relaxing.I will be booking a night to stay soon so will give a more comprehensive review.

The Hotel itself was lovely, lots of history. The ambience was lacking, bar staff very unwelcoming, and front of house lacking completely. Seating very basic, and staff had no interest in your opinion. The food was okay, bigger meat portions would be nicer. I felt sorry for the person serving up the carvery, he had to leave his station to chase up refills whilst a big queue was building up. Co-ordonation between the kitchen and carvery was abysmal at bust time, we had to wait 5 minutes for gravy to arrive, whilst food was going cold. It needs far better managerial staff. They were outside smoking and clearing tables.

Good food, good rooms, great reception staff. Then we come to the waitresses. One was extremely good, polite, efficient and most importantly smiling and happy. The other two were anything but. One of these two was behind the bar in the afternoon and wasn't any happier there. Not a smile to be had from either of them. I had to ask for saucers and teaspoons for our coffee. These two did manage to mar an otherwise great family celebration. Considering we spent upwards of £700 I expected a little civility.

Changed hands so we went to see what it was like. Bar and staff were up to the good old standard. Wanted to try the food in the bar. It used to be awful, lack of care, but no go. Like many eateries lack of kitchen staff meant no food. Keep your eyes open for a food review.

The owners were fantastic last night. While enjoying a lovely drink last night with family, my sister in law became unwell.... ( sun stroke we think) The owners were so attentive and couldn't have done more to help. Very kind and thoughtful. Thank you.
