Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add penne pasta and cook, stirring occasionally, until al dente, about 11 minutes. Drain the pasta.

Slowly pour in the milk, stirring continuously. Heat the mixture to just below boiling, then gradually add in the cheese, stirring until the sauce is creamy and smooth. Mix in the peas and mushrooms and cook on low for about 4 minutes, until everything is heated through.
