Discover the Latest Hipcamp Feature for Locating Dark Sky Campsites
Camping and stargazing are a perfect match, just like campfires and s’mores. Depending on your location, you might enjoy breathtaking views of constellations, planets, and shooting stars—or you may be faced with a sky overwhelmed by light pollution.
Hipcamp, an outdoor equivalent to Airbnb, has introduced a Dark Skies Map designed to assist both adventurers and amateur astronomers in discovering campsites across the U.S. where the skies are least affected by light pollution and stars can be seen at their brightest.
This map combines light pollution data from the International Dark-Sky Association with a database of over 340,000 campsites, RV parks, cabins, tree houses, and glamping sites available on Hipcamp’s platform, showcasing locations that provide clear views of the night sky.
According to Charles Post, Hipcamp’s consulting ecologist, a good guideline is to choose campsites 20 to 30 miles away from major urban centers, while zooming into the map reveals specific areas affected by light pollution. He also mentioned that if you're uncertain about when to plan your trip, the site’s Stargazing Calendar highlights significant astrological events throughout the year, including eclipses and meteor showers.
Even if you choose not to reserve a campsite, you can still utilize the tool to discover locations where the stars twinkle brilliantly. (Alternatively, consider visiting one of the designated International Dark Sky Parks, Places, Preserves, or Sanctuaries.)
If you decide to go camping, here are some exceptional Hipcamp locations we recommend.
