Exclusive invitation-only elite status for airlines and hotels: Understanding its benefits and how to attain it

Elite status with airlines and hotels comes with a host of advantages for frequent flyers, but obtaining this premium status requires an investment.
To reach the top-tier status with major U.S. airlines and hotel chains, you generally need to spend thousands of dollars and/or frequently fly with that airline or stay at properties under the hotel's brand. However, for frequent business travelers and high-profile clients, this spending threshold is minor compared to their overall yearly expenses.
Additionally, airlines offer unofficial, invitation-only elite tiers that grant even greater benefits and privileges. These can include private check-in areas, luxury car transfers from lounges to the aircraft, and substantial upgrade options. Hotel invitation-only status may also provide priority upgrades and enhanced hotel amenities.

Many of these perks are not officially listed online but have been compiled from direct accounts by TPG staff and readers.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to these exclusive status tiers.
How to achieve invitation-only status

These premium tiers typically demand significant annual spending, though meeting certain spending levels doesn’t guarantee you’ll attain invitation-only status. However, past experiences and current stories can provide insight into what might aid your qualification.
Invest in the corporate travel program
While reports suggest that American Airlines is not accepting new applications for its AirPass program, you may still secure invitation-only status by initially investing in a prepaid business travel service. For instance, investing $50,000 per year in United Airlines' PassPlus often results in a nomination for Global Services.
Take into account your location and ticket types
Your chances of obtaining invitation-only status depend not only on how much you spend but also on the types of tickets you purchase. For example, travelers who frequently buy full-fare premium tickets such as business or first class are more likely to receive an invitation compared to those who primarily purchase discounted economy tickets. While your flying habits do matter, spending remains the most significant factor in achieving invitation-only status.
Furthermore, your departure city usually influences your eligibility. Airlines often set higher spending requirements for travelers flying from major hub airports than for those at non-hub airports like Albany International Airport (ALB), Portland International Airport (PDX), and Tampa International Airport (TPA).
Occupy a significant position
Airlines are always on the lookout for individuals who can sway others to choose their services. Those who influence travel decisions, such as corporate travel managers or holders of corporate accounts, may receive invitation-only status, encouraging them to select the airline for their employees' travel arrangements. This privilege can also apply to politicians and celebrities.
Concierge Key elite status with American Airlines

American Airlines' Concierge Key is an elite program designed for high-spending customers who typically spend a minimum of $50,000 per year and travel over 200,000 miles (though these are not strict requirements). The program provides numerous perks, including a dedicated phone line with reduced wait times and access to the top phone agents.
Concierge Key members receive exclusive benefits, including access to Flagship First Check-In at select airports, private vehicle transfers on certain connections, Admirals Club membership with entry to Flagship lounges, priority preboarding ahead of Group 1, top upgrade priority, and additional systemwide upgrades. They also enjoy waived service fees, guaranteed ticket purchasing even on sold-out flights, occasional Flagship First Dining passes, and the ability to gift Executive Platinum elite status to another person.
One of the standout benefits is that Concierge Key members have their copays waived on all upgrades. When using American Airlines miles for an upgrade, they are exempt from the usual cash supplement. This advantage can lead to significant savings, especially on international flights — however, it's essential to remember that using miles in conjunction with cash or a systemwide upgrade provides the same upgrade priority.
Delta Air Lines 360 elite status

Delta 360 is an exclusive, invitation-only program for elite SkyMiles members that offers perks beyond those available to Diamond Medallion members. Invitations are determined by a customer's total investment with Delta, and if you qualify, an airline representative will reach out to you directly.
Delta 360 arguably provides the least beneficial perks among the three airline invitation-only tiers listed here, while requiring the most effort to qualify. There’s no definitive formula for the necessary spending or flying, but multiple FlyerTalk readers have reported spending nearly $90,000 without receiving an invitation.
Delta 360 includes benefits such as Delta Sky Club membership, a dedicated phone line with 24/7 access to knowledgeable agents, an increased likelihood of a Porsche tarmac transfer, and an annual luxury gift. Previous gifts have included a magnum of Louis Roederer Champagne, Tiffany & Co. flutes, and Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses.
United Airlines Global Services elite status

United's exclusive Global Services tier has fluctuating requirements, with most information indicating a minimum spending threshold of $50,000. However, there is a well-documented method to achieve it — by accumulating 4 million lifetime miles on United-operated flights.
Similar to many of these tiers, Global Services status offers much more than just extra miles on paid tickets or complimentary checked baggage. Rather, Global Services signifies that an entire United team is dedicated to ensuring you have the optimal experience.
Global Services members benefit from a dedicated phone line with highly skilled customer service representatives who provide tailored assistance. They also receive a range of perks, including the ability to create their own award availability, a separate fare class for upgrades, exclusive check-in areas, access to United Club lounges, priority boarding ahead of Group 1, priority meal orders, and Jaguar tarmac transfers where available.
Hyatt Courtesy Card elite status

The Hyatt Courtesy Card represents an exclusive, invitation-only elite status tier that grants undisclosed benefits and recognition. The criteria for attaining this status remain confidential, but reports suggest four potential pathways to qualify: owning a Hyatt hotel, being nominated by a general manager and approved by World of Hyatt, frequently staying and spending significantly at Hyatt properties, and managing major corporate travel accounts that generate substantial business for Hyatt.
The perks associated with the Hyatt Courtesy Card are also kept under wraps, but they appear to focus on providing exceptional service and recognition during your stay. This includes priority for upgrades, access to the best available suite, a welcome gift, and personalized acknowledgment that varies by property.
Hyatt usually distributes Courtesy Card nominations in late February or early March, aligning with the conclusion of the previous year’s status. While the exact number of Courtesy Card members is unknown, estimates suggest it includes around 1,000 individuals through hotel ownership (given Hyatt's approximately 1,000 properties) and a few thousand more through various other avenues.
Marriott Cobalt elite status

Marriott Bonvoy has gone to great lengths to keep its invitation-only Cobalt tier a closely guarded secret, advising agents that "There are NO external Public Relations or communications about this program, and associates should not discuss it outside of work." However, TPG managed to uncover the full details a few years back.
Based on the information we've gathered, there are no publicly disclosed criteria for obtaining Cobalt status; however, Marriott staff can nominate individuals at their discretion. These nominations are then reviewed and approved by the president and CEO of Marriott.
In contrast to other programs listed here, Marriott Cobalt offers a more explicit array of benefits. These encompass Marriott Ambassador Elite status along with the following at all locations:
- Upgrade to the best available rooms, including suites
- A personalized note from the general manager
- Personal introduction with the general manager during your visit
At premium properties, Cobalt members enjoy all these benefits plus a customized welcome gift. At luxury locations, they also receive "a unique on-property experience for themselves and a guest."
Unless you highly value the opportunity to meet the hotel manager during your stay, this status seems to offer little additional benefit over Marriott Ambassador status. Nonetheless, some of the experiences available to members at luxury properties can be quite delightful.

It's important to mention that this information was shared in 2019, so some benefits may have evolved since then.
Conclusion
Being part of invitation-only status tiers can greatly improve your travel experience, and the programs listed above are among the most recognized in this category. However, various airlines and hotels might also have unpublished status levels or offer undisclosed perks to their most valued clients.
While some individuals might adjust their annual travel schedules to pursue a higher elite status, receiving an invitation to these exclusive programs typically requires significant spending—often in the mid-five figures each year—on a specific airline or hotel. Alternatively, possessing influence over major corporate travel contracts can enhance your likelihood of getting invited.
In the end, it may not be worth the effort to seek an invitation due to the vague qualification criteria. However, if an invitation does come your way during your regular travels, be prepared for an exceptional year ahead.
