Keith Haring Makes His L.A. Museum Debut with a Grand Exhibition

From May 27 to October 8, the Broad Museum in Los Angeles will present over 120 artworks and archival materials by the iconic artist Keith Haring in a major exhibition titled Keith Haring: Art Is for Everybody. Curated by Sarah Loyer, this exhibition marks the first significant museum retrospective of Haring’s work in Los Angeles.

Haring is celebrated for his graffiti-inspired creations, characterized by vibrant colors and dynamic, minimalist lines. Although he passed away at the young age of 31, he left behind an extensive body of work comprising over 10,000 pieces, significantly influencing pop culture. Today, his art can be found on a variety of merchandise, from Uniqlo t-shirts to sticky notes.

Art Is for Everybody will be organized into ten galleries, offering visitors an intimate glimpse into Haring’s life. The exhibition will feature not only his paintings, drawings, and sculptures but also personal belongings such as toys, buttons, and activist posters. The showcased artifacts and artworks range from the 1970s, when Haring was a student, to 1988, two years before his death in 1990 due to AIDS-related complications. Attendees can expect to see pieces already in the Broad’s collection, including Red Room (1988) and Untitled (1984), alongside works from the Keith Haring Foundation in New York, which he established in 1989. Additionally, the museum shop, known as the Shop, will be transformed to resemble Haring’s Pop Shop, which he envisioned as an extension of his art to make it accessible to everyone.

While visiting the Broad, guests can also explore artworks created by Haring’s contemporaries, such as Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

On June 1, shortly after the opening of Art Is for Everybody, the Broad will host a discussion featuring Brad Gooch, the author of Haring's biography, and choreographer Bill T. Jones, who collaborated with Haring. This event is part of the museum’s Un-Private Collection series, aimed at making art more accessible and understandable for the public.

Keith Haring: Art Is for Everybody will be exhibited at the Broad from May 27 to October 8, 2023. Tickets will go on sale starting Friday, April 14, at 10 a.m. via the Broad’s website. Adult tickets will cost $22, while students can enter for $15, and children aged 17 and under will receive free admission. (General admission to the Broad is free, but it does not cover entry to special exhibitions like Art Is for Everybody or Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away.)
