Reasons the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card remains a favorite in our wallets
When my family and I initially got the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, it was mainly for the enticing sign-up bonus. Little did I know that this card would soon secure a lasting place in my wallet and my husband's, long after the bonus miles were gone.
Here are all the reasons we're still utilizing the Venture Rewards more than I anticipated.
great earning rates
My husband prefers to keep his wallet simple, without juggling multiple cards or tracking various category bonuses for different purchases. Instead, he mainly relies on whatever card I suggest is best for the situation. The Venture Rewards card is perfect since it doesn't charge fees for adding an authorized user to the account (see rates and fees).
JUSTIN PAGET/GETTY IMAGESWhen he's not focused on meeting a spending bonus, earning 2 miles for every dollar spent with the Venture Rewards Card is quite appealing and actually outperforms many other cards available for non-bonus purchases. If you leverage miles through transfer partners, TPG's June 2024 valuations suggest you can achieve a value of 1.85 cents per mile. While it may not be the absolute highest return for everyday spending, it's certainly very competitive.
Flexible miles are simply unmatched
I can't resist earning airline miles, as they often provide exceptional value. However, with award charts gradually disappearing, flexible miles have become the most advantageous option. The international airline programs included in the Capital One transfer partner lineup might be the best choices for booking numerous awards since they still largely adhere to traditional award charts.
CHRISTIAN HEINZ/SHUTTERSTOCKThanks to Capital One's array of transfer partners, there's even more to appreciate about this card. But here's the reality: I haven't (yet) transferred any of our Capital One miles to these partners.
Perhaps we will in the future, as there are some excellent options available, ranging from Air Canada Aeroplan to Etihad Guest. For now, I’ve relished booking any travel we desire and then using our miles to offset those travel costs with just a few clicks.
For instance, my husband wanted to join our family in Hawaii a few summers ago and needed to fly on a specific date, at a precise time, and on a particular route to maximize his time with us. In that case, it made the most sense to purchase a cash ticket and then reimburse ourselves with Capital One miles. Given his lack of flexibility, traditional airline miles offered no advantage, even though Hawaii can sometimes be an excellent value with airline miles.
Key takeaways
The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is currently one of my top recommendations for families who travel — and this endorsement isn't solely based on statistics or bullet points.
If you haven't applied for the Venture Rewards card yet, now is an excellent opportunity to do so. It can help shield you from potential devaluations and might also streamline your award travel approach. This card is definitely worth considering for all kinds of credit card users.
