The Most Revered Musicians of Delhi Can Be Found in This Sacred Shrine

Countless threads hang from the lattice windows, carrying the heartfelt prayers of the worshippers.
The air is thick with the fragrance of rosewater and incense, while the melodic sound of qawwali fills the atmosphere.
This is Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah, the shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Nizamuddin, a revered pilgrimage site for Sufi followers worldwide.
Qawwali: The Divine Music of Devotion
Qawwali is a renowned musical tradition linked to Sufi music in India.
A blend of devotional poetry and Hindustani music, qawwali was pioneered by the legendary scholar, poet, and mystic Amir Khusrow.
The shrine hosts one of the most celebrated Qawwali families, the Nizami Bandhu, who have been performing at Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah for centuries.
"This is one of my favorite places in Delhi," shares Amit Kilam, drummer and vocalist of the rock band Indian Ocean. "It transports me to another time. It's like an oasis, not overtly religious, yet offers a deep sense of peace."
In qawwali, the words take precedence over the music, often repeated to deepen the emotional connection.
"The musician begins with a specific set of notes and repeats them continuously, varying them slightly over a simple melody, gradually creating an immersive atmosphere."
An exceptional tourist destination.
The Nizamuddin Basti neighborhood itself is a must-visit destination.
"It meets all the criteria for a fantastic tourist spot. The architecture is stunning, steeped in history, and the food around here is absolutely amazing," says Kilam.
"This place draws everyone from all walks of life and from every corner of the world."
"There’s something deeply moving about faith and its beauty – this place goes beyond traditional religion and enters the realm of spirituality."
For an unforgettable qawwali experience, visit Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah on Thursday or Friday evenings. Performances take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and 9 to 10:30 p.m. More details on kunzum.com.
