We stayed in a variety of places during our 2 week holiday around central Japan and yes there are more modern places with more amenities however Onyado Yamakyu is well worth a stay and we're so glad we stopped thereThe staff are so incredibly friendly and helpful, they offer a shuttle service from and to the station at the beginning and end of your stay although the local bus does also stop just round the corner. The hotel is full of display cabinets with a range of glassware and intricacies.Location wise it's right next to a shrine and in a quieter area however it's only a 10 minute walk into the center tourist part of TakayamaThere's a male and female onsen with large indoor pool and an outdoor bath. The rooms don't have their own shower but you can just shower down in the onsen. The food was amazing and done by local grandmas and it shows with just how beautiful and delicious all the meals were.

It's a quiet inn. The innkeeper's collection of glass and prints is displayed like a small museum. The food is called Hidan no Kakasama cuisine.I was satisfied with the warm and heartwarming hospitality I received.

If you're looking for an authentic Japanese-feel stay in Takayama, book this place!Honestly couldn't be happier with my time spent there. The lovely traditional rooms (very cosy futons), the amazingly friendly staff (had fun learning new words and talking) , the relaxing baths (particularly liked the outdoor hot bath), the morning coffee corner (where I could read local papers and enjoy some peace) and the cooked meals (dressing in the yukata provided felt great and like I was in edo-period japan)!Everything was amazing.I want to emphasise the great food, breakfast and dinners felt like going out to an expensive restaurant and we looked forward to them most in our days. The staff really put in the effort here and make you feel very welcome. Do yourself a favour and book a few nights

This ryokan is a perfect choice to enjoy your stay in Takayama. The location is unbeatable, as it is in a very authentic and quiet neighborhood, ideal for immersing yourself in a Japan away from the big cities: streets of single-family houses next to canals, gardens, orchards, small shops and restaurants. In addition, it is very close to one of the most famous temple routes in the city, in the middle of nature. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped. They have indoor and outdoor onsen. Breakfast and dinner are included, with generous portions and lots of variety. The staff is very attentive and friendly. A detail to highlight is that they take a photo of you during your stay and give it to you at check out.If you arrive by private vehicle, they have parking. The only things that maybe we didn't like so much is that being a ryokan with so many rooms, you share the onsen with many people at the same time, and on the other hand, the rooms are not too spacious. All in all, this ryokan is a great choice for any visitor to Takayama.

I stayed for one night, and the cost performance was good and the food was good. Some people in the comments were harsh in various ways, but I don't think it was that bad at all. The landlady was also cheerful and very responsive. The waitresses are energetic ladies who work efficiently. Please take things with a grain of salt. Because I'm working hard. It was a good inn.
