An excellent experience. The house is old with modern bathrooms. The rooms were quaint, ours had a balcony overlooking the Koi pond, garden and the powerful river. The food was amazingly good. With every dish having it's own unique flavor and story. Equal to any high end restaurant I have seen in Japan. The Host was the most nicest person you would ever want to meet. From story telling and singing to even helping us when we misread the bus schedule.I highly suggest this home as a place to stay while hiking the Nakasendo trail.

I had a great stay at Minshuku Koshinzuka. The place is old and charming, a unique experience. Despite being old, it's very clean and well kept. I liked to ear the sound of the river from inside the house. The host Masa-san is kind and does so much more than just warmly welcoming guests, he offers a full experience with songs and storytelling, despite the language barrier. Dinner and breakfast were included in my stay and were absolutely worth it. We also ate noodles from the bamboo outside, a fun experience. I wish I stayed longer! Highly recommended.

Fantastic inn to stay after walking the Nakasendo trail from Magome to Tsumago. Minshuku Koshinzuka is just at the end of the trail, in a peaceful location, next to the river which you can hear from your room. …

We choose this place because my husband thought the food looked great in pictures, but didn’t think much about it. We received emails reminding us that it’s a small inn run by an older couple, and we were to not expect hotel level service, and bring some things by ourselves (we can request towels etc for extra charge btw). But, when we went there actually everything was perfect. The room was amazing, shared bathrooms also sufficiently clean. But the thing we did not at all expect was the hospitality.I think this was maybe one of the best experience of my life.Included in the cost of the room was dinner (and breakfast), and turns out the dinner was set with storytelling and singing. The Ojiisan (grandpa) that run the place would explain where he got all the ingredients in the food we eat, which was mainly from his own place. He did all of this with such rigor and purpose that you know upon listening to him that it’s more than just dinner, it’s about explaining to us a way of life that is soon lost. Beautiful. If you are worried whether you’d understand (as it’s mostly in Japanese with some English here and there to accommodate foreigners), don’t worry. He is a master storyteller that can transcend language. You will understand once you’re there. Absolutely a gem.

Transportation access is not very good, but I'm really glad I went. |It was my first time staying in an old folk house, and I was excited to create a house that gave me a sense of traditional life. …

One of the best experiences in Japan. Sharing dinner made from local food around the fire while listening to the hosts stories was a once in a lifetime experience. The room was lovely and bathrooms were modern. After arriving in the rain on the trial, the hosts made us feel extremely warm and welcome and even helped dry our clothes.

It was probably the best experience I ever had staying anywhere. It was simply magical. The host was amazing and nice, he even sang a traditional song for us after dinner. The food is home made and delicious, the rooms are wonderful, the bathroom and the washrooms are modern and clean. I strongly recommend staying here!

I highly recommend this place to have a real Ryokan experience. Masa is a truly incredible host, he does everything to make you feel at home by offering you the utmost hospitality. The place is convenient if you go up from Magome on foot, even if it is about a fifteen minute walk from Tsumago where there is more life (restaurants, shops, things to see). You can also include dinner and breakfast in your stay, which I highly suggest since he cooks all the produce from his own garden, including rice. Must try!
