This is the hot spring/onsen house that you want! The rooms are big relative to other AirBnB places we stayed and the stairs are a saner pitch (steepness). The washer/dryer combo work great for visitors living out of suitcases—make sure to read the posted guidance about keeping onsen steam away from the electronic appliances. The host, Gabriel, was responsive and helpful throughout our stay.Having the open-air outdoor onsen onsite saves a couple of hours every day from traveling by bus down to crowded public onsen around Kowakudani. The house onsen are comfortably large enough for two people. This house is so perfect for a January trip! It is low enough elevation that snow was not a concern for us at all this year. It was so peaceful, restful, and restorative. The buses come by often enough that only minimal planning is required. The kitchen has everything you need and the refrigerator is large. The indoor onsen was under construction in January 2024, so please be careful stepping down into it to access the outdoor onsen. If you have older parents with you, help them down the step or use the outdoor staircase.

I used it with 5 people in the first half of August. You can't expect Japanese hospitality here. The building is old and damaged. There is no cooling air conditioning, so it is quite uncomfortable to stay in the room during the day in August.Hot springs is a selling point, but first of all, the amount of hot water is too little as a picture and it takes 7 hours to fill the open-air bath.In other words, it is night to enter even if you check in at 15:00. And the amount of hot water is really small, so even in the summer it's lukewarm in the morning and we can't enter. You can find two picture of open-air bath and an indoor bath in the photo, but there is no enough much hot water. And what is shocking is that the indoor bath has rotten wood and is full of garbage and cannot be used even if it is filled with hot water. There is a BBQ set in the picture, but the gas cylinder was empty.I inquired and was told to buy charcoal, but the store was already closed. We used the equipment only on the second day.We had paid 100,000 yen for 5 people for 2 nights without meals.I really want to ask house owner staying one night by himself.

Such a unique holiday retreat in the middle of onsen country, with its own private outdoor bath and room enough to accommodate 6 people easily. Massage chair is a bonus.

Kowakudani is a beautiful and unique house in the forested hills of Hakone. The star feature is the spacious Hot Spring bath which features both inside and outside pools. The inside is luxurious wood, and the outside is beautifully landscaped stone. The outside bath looks out on a nice and spacious by Japanese standards garden that would be a lovely place to have a barbecue with friends. It has a modern efficient kitchen which is connected to a cozy bar. One of the nicest dining kitchens I’ve ever seen. It’s the perfect getaway spot for a family or one or two couples.
