One of the best places we have stayed in Japan. This place was mostly out of reach from the hustle and bustle of Kyoto, yet close enough to many other overlooked attractions. The space was very well taken care of, and our hosts had top-notch hospitality. Special thanks to Sachiko-San who took the extra effort to speak with us in English and made us feel at home. Next time we might want to stay here longer to embrace the peace and tranquility of Otsu.Grateful for this stay!

Three of us stayed for 1 night only and it was one of our favourite places in our whole trip. The lady who looked after us was open and kind and made a beautiful breakfast. The room was the tradition one on the second floor with small balcony looking over the garden. Lovely features, very clean and comfortable, with a toilet and wash basin. The bathroom is down stairs with a very nice tub and shower room all to yourself. Don't be put off by the term shared bathroom! Highly recommended and great value for money.

There is a room with a paid bathroom, which is very nice👍It's a pity that I didn't make a reservation for breakfast. The only slight drawback is thatPersonally, I think the bed is a bit hard...Having said that, I will still go again if I have the chance.

Very happy with our stay at Inase Otsu Machiya. After spending days in Tokyo and Hakone, it was a welcomed change to be in a laid back town within the proximity of Kyoto. The machiya is beautifully resorted from an old rice shop, and the staff (miki-san and sachiko-san) were more than accommodating. We truly enjoyed our time here.

This is the hotel I stayed at on my first trip to Otsu. It was built in the early 20th century and was apparently a rice store. The atmosphere was old-fashioned, but there was no elevator and it was a communal shower facility, which was a bit inconvenient.

*It is good to be able to stay at a property that is a tangible cultural property.*The staff is also kind.*There is always the sound of construction vehicles outside and the sound of staff doing something inside, so it doesn't feel like a calm space. The stairs are steep and it's a bit difficult to get your luggage up and down!I don't think I'll go there often. It might be a good idea to use it as an overnight stay in between traveling somewhere. There are few parking lots in the area, the roads are narrow, and the nightly price is high.Expensive for the location.

Magnificent place of rest and retreat after the tourists of Kyoto... Too bad the surroundings are so sad. We still manage to find 2-3 restaurants, but you have to look carefully!
