My family and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights, 5 people and in adjacent rooms. Overall it’s a beautiful place to stay. There are little towns not far from the hotel that you can visit by bus or walk to, just be mindful of the bus schedules. The hotel can be quite busy at the lobby during check in times but otherwise you are able to enjoy the facilities provided in privacy. Do check out the beautiful garden at level 1. I will have to say our first night was slightly unfortunate. We returned from dinner around 8.30pm and excited to use the onsen facilities but returned to one of our rooms smelling like cigarette smoke. At first I couldn’t tell where it was coming from and called reception just to let them know. It subsided but the smoke smell got really bad again and had a feeling this was not going to stop. This time I managed to take a photo evidence of a guest directly below our room holding a cigarette. My husband and I went down to reception and show the staff the photo. The staff at the front desk was polite and apologetic but needed to talk to their manager about possibly changing rooms which may incur extra charge, but they wanted to check what was possible which is understandable so we were happy to wait at the lobby. Someone came to talk to us, they did not introduce their name or their role, only to find out they were the assistant manager at the end of the ordeal. They took a copy of the photo and said that they will talk to the perpetrators and let them know that they should not smoke (warning) or they have to pay a fine the next time they get caught. At this stage, the hotel should have just enforced their rules and request the guest to pay the fine straight up to ensure this behaviour stops immediately. When asked to change rooms, they stated it was fully booked and we needed to pay more to upgrade. So the perpetrators gets a warning but the affected guests has to fork out more money to enjoy their stay? What tipped this over from bad to unacceptable was that the assistant manager said that if the problem persists even after the guest was warned by hotel staff, I should either tell the staff again or I should just close my window. But the whole point of booking this hotel is to enjoy nature and make full use of the private onsen bath which is located on the balcony. As a paying guest, I should not be responsible to police how other guests continue to behave and report back any further misconduct to staff. Especially as I have already provided solid proof the first time. I expect to be provided a productive solution so that I can swiftly return to enjoying my stay, not further burdened with a responsibility to keep another guest in check. In general, the other staff here are polite, friendly and helpful but the way this specific manager handled this scenario was unfortunately not up to parWe do appreciate the subsequent efforts by other staff members to rectify the situation up until our check out which definitely salvage our memory and time here.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Hakone Kowakien Hotel situated in the hills of Hakone. After taxiing down the hill from Gora Station we found the Hotel, with its post modern exterior, a simple layer of shoji-like façade, welcoming us with automated doors into a foyer space. This hotel is newish and the spacious rooms, discreet design, homely finishes are filled with scrupulously thought-out furniture and fixtures. A great place to greet, be greeted; relax in incredibly appointed pools, saunas and hot spas; celebrate with friends or every generation of family, or recover from a life thump. I can’t really describe how comforting this place was but I can tell you it was hard to leave.

My wife and I stayed here in October 2024 to celebrate her birthday. The selling point is the onsen and the service. Each staff member went out of there way to provide exceptional service. The breakfast is incredible (you can build your own chirashi bowl) and I highly recommend the set dinner menu. We will definitely be visiting this hotel again.

It was a very satisfying hotel. The rooms are simple and beautifully decorated. The room wasn't that big, but the bed was well placed and it felt spacious, so I didn't feel cramped. The open-air bath attached to the room was small, but I was satisfied with the view, but the room only had a shower and was small, so I thought that was a bit of a disappointment with the indoor bath. The special pudding that was served at breakfast was really delicious and I was surprised, even though I'm not a big fan of sweets.

This hotel is so beautiful and serene! It's tucked away in the mountains with waterfalls, definitely worth the splurge and time to come out here. The rooms have a nice view, very spacious and could comfortably fit 4 (with tatami mats). Included with the rooms is a breakfast buffet with an extensive menu of both Japanese and western items. Staff also provided a great experience and service

Such a shame - such potential - but lack of staff - overpopulation. Cleanliness awfull. 2 hrs waiting to check-in. Lack of maintenance all around. Staff uniterested. annoyed, over worked or overbored ? Best to avoid the place until other management takes over and puts the right priorities.

We were quite excited for our stay at this hotel in Hakone. Unfortunately, the service was subpar along with the room and amenities. There was a lot of staff present when checking in yet it took them over 40 minutes to check us in. When we returned to enter our room after 3 pm we encountered the same issue with requesting our room keys. This whole process was a waste of time and frustrating. Lastly, they provided a voucher to use at their bar lounge for the inconvenience…which included sweets. We didn’t want any freebies but only to be heard and explained to, instead they cut us off and handed us this voucher in order to not listen. Later we figured out almost everyone else was given the same voucher. On top of this situation, the front staff were sassy and mentioned something about us being American to their other colleagues. I understand there are culture differences but we were patient and respectful the entire time and got tired of being handle like our inquiries were a nuisance. We didn’t appreciate being stereotyped either. For the price of the hotel I have stayed at better. This was not the standard service I have received in Japan during all of my previous accommodation stays at other hotels.Room: The decor was light and pretty but much of the room had a lot of wear and tear. We encountered pieces of trash near the floor of the beds (wrappers). Next door neighbors were very loud unfortunately.
