This is a nicely renovated 2-storey machiya on a quiet street. Downstairs there is a small kitchen, living room, bathroom, separate toilet and washing machine. Upstairs, there are two rooms, each with two futon beds. The location in Gion is perfect. It's right next to Yasaka Shrine and within walking distance of Chion-in, Shorenin, Kodaiji, and Kiyomizu-dera. The bus stops and train stations for visiting the rest of Kyoto tourist spots (with only up to one transfer), including Villa Katsura and Uji, are just a few minutes walk away.

0/5 stars, incredibly disappointing customer service. It’s my first time in Japan and I booked 3 nights with my girlfriend. A strong typhoon hit Japan just 3 days before we were to fly out, shutting down shinkansen (bullet trains), and cancelling flights. We attempted to cancel for a refund, but they said as long as the Shinkansen was operational on the day we booked, they wouldn’t refund us. On the day we were supposed to come in, my girlfriend’s grandmother was hospitalized, and we tried to explain the situation to customer service. They clearly did not care, and refused to refund us for the booking. We tried to change our booking to a different day, but nothing was available. After refusing to refund us, they asked for proof of hospitalization which we found to be greatly disrespectful as they had already adamantly denied refunding us anything. Do yourself a favor and book somewhere nearby so that if an emergency arises, you can get your money back.

Located at the heart of Kyoto's most historic area, the cozy yet spacious Machiya offers an enhanced Japanese experience, magnifying the serene surroundings. I fell in love with the perfect blend between modern and traditional, and found great comfort during my stay. I was able to travel to various tourist attractions by foot and navigate around easily.
