I visited out of curiosity to see how nice the hotel is and to decide if I would stay in one of their many rooms in coming months. I instantly fell in love with the beautiful decor, chandeliers, and general atmosphere of this characterful and very underrated, large and impressive building.I wandered around admiring the pictures on walls, ornaments and other pretty fixtures and fittings and finally had a drink in the downstairs bar. Bar staff are very friendly and courteous and reception staff are very approachable and knowledgeable.Room rates are underpriced in my opinion because this truly is a magnificent, historic and special place.I can't wait to stay here in the near future.

Just for context, I booked a £45 room, not a £200 room. Good sized room with a table & 2 chairs + a make up table / desk with chair. Yes the room was slightly shabby but everything was clean, everything worked and they had all the items you needed: kettle, tea, coffee etc. hair dryer. There was security on the door and the rest of the hotel was clean & staff welcoming. Excellent central location. Great value for money.

I booked this at the absurdly low cost of £36 because I just needed a bed for the night and nothing more. I then read some horror story reviews and expected the worst. Instead I was greeted by one of the most impressive hotels I have stayed at. The interior is awesome and beautiful. Carpets are not dirty. They appear to be new.The staff were helpful and efficient. Indeed there is security but I guess this is related to the location - bang central Manchester. Yes they asked for id but this is standard in many continental European hotels.I had to leave before breakfast so I can't comment on this. Some reviews talk about noisy rooms and single glazed windows. Not a problem for me since my room had no windows. I guess that's a problem for some but for me it meant peace and dark. Lighting in the room was good. The room interior was functional. A bit like a student bedsit. But not bad. There was stuff for tea and coffee. Attached are photos of the room and the main stairwell and foyer. Plus a door number. 237 of course...

It's generally as expected for the price. I've given it two stars but have stayed here more than once. ||The hotel itself was presumably once quite grand. …

Total tourist trap hotel. Avoid||None of the amenities in the room were available, including the ‘free WiFi’ which is only in the lobby. Not mentioned on the booking page. …

Booked last minute, arrived and waited over 20 minutes to check in, whilst 2 of the reception staff were dealing with other guests and one was stood around doing jack all, who barked at us when we attempted to approach her. …

Check-in was fast. They require photo ID at check-in.Rooms in need of a revamp as well as bathrooms that show some wear and tear.Well stocked tea and coffee in the room.Rooms were clean throughout, all linens clean. There is a hairdryer in the room.Unfortunately, the hot water tap didn't work. It only trickled, so I was unable to take a bath.Room walls are very thin, and you can hear everything from your neighbours.Unfortunately for me, I heard a couple arguing, 2 dogs barking and noisy children.

Stayed here about 10 years ago and it was truly awful. We had a smoking room and this was way after the smoking ban! However I’m pleased to say they seem to be having a bit of a light refresh and the smoking rooms are gone. Room was clean although basic. Looks like it had recently been repainted with some new furniture. New, but firm bed. The staff are doing their best given the circumstances and the company they work for/it’s notorious reputation for under investment. If you book an advance you can get some really good deals and given the hotel prices in Manchester now, it really outweighs the negatives. Overall would definitely recommend, although sometimes you just have to view it as being so bad it’s a bit camp 😂

If you fancy a night out in Manchester, it's a safe and clean place. However, no air conditioning exists, so I imagine it’s potentially less fab in summer. But we don’t do summer in the UK anyway.I got one of the rooms on the very top floor with round windows, and it was lovely and comfy with a great view. I loved the room.Clean and comfy bed.I attended horror conventions in the hotel in the 1990s and have always had happy memories of it.Breakfast was nice but basic, and the odd, strange person was arriving at the Buffet with a bottle of vodka. The hotel has some characters in it.The reception staff was friendly, but they were chatting on arrival. They managed to book me and the other person checking in at the same time into the same room, which was a nightmare as it was a bit of a journey to find the room and then come back down to the foyer again.

We weren't officially due to check in until 3, but when we arrived at 1.15 a very helpful chap on reception told us the room had just been prepared, so we were able to drop our bags off.The public areas are very grand and well maintained, so you really feel as though you're entering a 5 star establishment. We had a clean modern spacious room with a large comfortable bed and tea/coffee facilities. The bathroom was up to date and plenty big enough, unlike some places we've stayed at.It was a warm night so we had the window open which allowed in some noise from Portland St, but nothing too intrusive.Overall, we felt that we'd stayed in a top notch hotel for a budget hotel price.Highly recommended.
