The pros;• The location - it’s close enough to walk from the coach and train stations. It’s also located on the hill close to The Hoe and the seaside.• The staff - both reception and floor staff were extremely friendly and helpful. When I requested to leave my luggage for a few hours after check-out, they had no issue with doing so.• The cleanliness - the room was very clean.• The building - I love staying in old buildings with some history behind rather than holiday-inn style, brand-new boring hotels. The building is absolutely gorgeous, especially the staircase at the reception area. At night the building was lit by gas lights outside, which I found fascinating. The cons;• Dining areas & lounge - I found these areas aren’t promoted well. There’s no information of special dishes, set menu or spirits/cocktails mentioned anywhere within the building nor on the leaflet they gave me with the key card. Hence, I didn’t use them much and dined out elsewhere.• Dated room - my double bedroom came with a massive bed and space as well as the bathtub I requested for. But the bathroom window was always ajar & couldn’t be shut completely. Additionally, the window in the bedroom kept rattling when winds were blowing. On top, the radiator wasn’t heating up properly due to air being trapped in it, and they need to bleed it to fix. Carpet had stains, so as the ceiling. Overall, I found the bedroom required more TLC.• The furnishings - I loved the mahogany wooden furniture that came with the room. But when I had a bottle of Prosecco in an ice bucket, there’s no cloth provided with it. Additionally, there were no coasters in the room. When placing cold or hot drinks directly on the wooden furniture, marks can be left on the furniture permanently and can damage them. I used one of my towels instead, but would be nice if they could have provided coasters in the room with tea-making facilities.

The hotel building is "grand" and was obviously one of the places to be in its heyday.|Although travelling solo I was part of a larger group using the hotel as a base.|I had a single room which was well furnished and of a good size.  …

This beautiful hotel was built in 1863 and still carrys a lot of its Victorian charm. The building itselfs architecture is absolutely stunning both internally and externally. Our room was very comfortable and bright with large windows. We had a lovely view across the park and city.We slept like logs and woke up to a delicious breakfast with enough tasty food to feed a army. I indulge and tried a bit of everything. The staff in the hotel were very friendly and knowledgeable and were willing to help and chat about the hotels history. This hotel might not be eveyones cup of tea but I certainly enjoyed my stay here and I will be back. I'd strongly recommend it if your interested in history.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at a charming hotel that dates back to 1863. Despite its age, the hotel is remarkably well-maintained, offering a unique blend of historical charm and modern comfort. It may not be a typical luxury hotel, but it has a distinct character that makes it special. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by how impeccably clean everything was. The rooms were spotless, with comfortable beds that ensured a good night’s sleep. The bathrooms were also very clean and well-equipped, providing all the necessary amenities. The hotel's kitchen and restaurant were outstanding. I had several meals there, and each one was delicious, with a great variety of dishes to choose from. The restaurant itself was well-maintained, creating a pleasant dining environment. One of the highlights of my stay was the exceptional service provided by the staff. They were incredibly friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with a smile. Their genuine hospitality made me feel right at home and significantly enhanced my overall experience. In summary, my stay at this historic hotel was delightful. Its well-preserved charm, combined with modern comforts and impeccable cleanliness, made for a memorable visit. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a unique and comfortable stay.
