Stayed here as part of our NC500 road trip. Outside looks quite 70,s but step inside to old world Scottish charm. Greeted by the hard working joyous Sam who could not have done more to make us feel welcome.  …

25 years ago we used to take coach loads of Americans into the bar here for a drink and it was lovely to go back last week. The room was fine but most importantly, clean. My meal in the bar was excellent, the nicest steak I had had in a long time. The owner and staff couldn't have been more polite and professional, basically it was a happy stay and I'll go back 👍

As the title says we had a lovely stay on the way back from Orkney. The room could have done with a bit of decorating but it was fine. Every member of staff we talked to was friendly and the place is clean. …

Nice hotel along the NC500. Friendly staff at reception and in the bar. Situated in a very quiet town with a quaint harbour. Staff in the restaurant were helpful about my partner’s dietary needs being a coeliac. …

We had a lovely time here and both of us and our dog were made to feel very welcome. The staff were so lovely and accommodating. The breakfast was lovely. Evening meals were available with supper large portions although the menu didn’t appear to change very much.

The hotel had no chef so were left with three choices 1. Soup as our main meal, 2. Chicken casserole that had been made at least 1 day before or 3. Drive 10 mins to the next restraunt which we did. …

Staying locally for 2 weeks in a cottage we decided to eat out one evening. Having read the Google reviews for the Portland I booked a table for my family.A very small menu to choose from tends to make one imagine that what is offered is of the highest standard. Hmmm.My wife had the lamb hotpot which she enjoyed despite the huge number of garden peas in the hotpot. My daughter had the chicken strips in an enchilada type affair, with a filling which was so spicy hot it wasn't possible to enjoy.I had the rump steak strips with vegetables and rice. It was very very salty. I ate it because I didn't want to make a scene but it was terrible.Clearly everything was freshly cooked but perhaps the chef should taste test before ringing the bell for service. The house merlot was very nice, and the locally sourced gin was also very good.Overall disappointed. Good reviews elsewhere so perhaps it was just a bad day, but an expensive one at that.

Wonderful staff, great rooms top quality food. All in a beautiful part of the country. Perfect place for our base to explore Caithness and Sutherland. Not our first visit and certainly not our last. Highly recommend to anyone travelling to the North or doing the NC500.

We visited for a meal with our dog. The staff were really friendly, but still professional. Apparently they are big dog lovers themselves and made quite a fuss over our 2 year old staffy. The restaurant was tastefully decorated in a traditional style and very clean and tidy. Menu was quite small, perhaps 5 or 6 options per starter/main, but the dishes all looked tasty and given the relative remoteness of Lybster it seemed sensible to do a small number of dishes well rather than over complicating the menu. The food was excellent. I had chicken strips for starter, which I usually find a little underwhelming, but the were lovely and clearly freshly made. My wife had the Cullen skink, which she really enjoyed. The burger main and the steak panini (both from the specials) were also really good and very filling. A very good meal, we hope to return.

Absolutely perfect! This is a hidden gem along the Scottish highlands. Value for price is unbelievable! Everything from my room, the bar and restaurant, the location (pull in right off the main road), and the surrounding landscape was perfect. The staff and service is excellent and helped me with everything I needed. Short drive to various viewpoints on the North Sea, castles and beaches, lovely lunch spots and boutique stores in neighbouring towns, and just under a 2hr drive from Inverness. Hope to be back soon! Thank you Sam, Jeff, and the rest of the staff!!!
