A fantastic hidden gem. My husband and I had a very memorable weekend here last weekend. We stayed in a beautiful Gatehouse suite, which felt like a home away from home. The staff were exceptional from beginning to end. …

The highlights were the meals and the staff. The 5 course dinner was a fabulous, very far from being “just dinner.” Breakfast was similarly excellent both being complemented by the pleasant staff. The room was quirky but the castle goes back to 1103 so is not going to feel like a modern chain which is why we chose to stay there. No door on bathroom felt a little uncomfortable and found we needed to open the window at night in October to get fresh air but that said we loved our overnight stay.

Sadly the recent 3 star reviews are entirely accurate. The staff are very helpful and breakfast was good but considering the price they are charging per night, the hotel and rooms are very disappointing.I appreciate it’s a very old castle and must be difficult to maintain but the place is dirty and not in a sudden appearance of a cobweb which we all have at home but a long standing grubbiness. It needs a really good clean and this is surely quite cheap to achieve. The carpets are completely threadbare on the main stairs and the red ones in the hallway were more appropriate for a school. The bathroom (which weirdly doesn’t have a door) was clean but the extractor fan in the shower was absolutely thick with cobwebs as were the windows. In addition, the beam in the room were so thick with dust, they had turned white. The lamps and sides of the dressing table mirrors were also really dusty. Finally, the sound proofing in the room was non existent and I could hear everything from next door. The bed was very comfortable though. The village of Amberley was delightful and we had a lovely drink in the Black Horse which was very buzzy.Such a shame. Had it been £90 a night then there would have been less to grumble about but at over £300, they really need to up their game.

Lovely location. Good food. Okay rooms, but the furnishings are a little cheap. Good enough service, but everywhere we thought the service was good we found we'd been charged extra for it (literally six extra surprise service charges on our two-night hotel bill) . . . so actually, the service was mediocre, considering.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at Amberley Castle. Whilst the staff was attentive (reception and restaurant), I found the hotel very "tired" and need of a good clean. The lounge settee in the reception area was covered in stains. We waited in one of loungerooms and noticed the dust on the skirting boards, railings around the room and on the screen in front of the fireplace. The depth of the dust indicated that it hadn't been cleaned in quite a while. Our room had dirty fingerprints around the door handles to the entry and bathroom. Old spiderwebs on window sills and ceiling corners. The furniture was dated and smelled musty. I didn't want to walk barefoot on the carpet as it looked and felt "greasy". The skirting boards were as bad as in the lounge area. The meals in the restaurant were very good and wine list beautifully curated. My only criticism is the pre-desserts at dinner were too heavy. A light sorbet would have been perfect. The gardens were lovely. The property was also well situated. Such a beautiful property, such a shame its not well maintained.
