Booked this hotel for Friday of the May racing festival 2 months in advance, 4 days to go and they tell me they have to cancel my booking because the hotel is being refurbished. Who refurbished their hotel on the busiest week in Chester with a weeks notice. |DO NOT TOUCH THIS HOTEL!!

We booked for a last minute trip. Hotel is not in the centre but we knew this when booking and taxi was 5 minutes from restaurants and bars. Room was lovely and the free standing bath was a fabulous extra. Reception friendly and check in / check out easy. Only complaint is £120 is a bit much but we would stay again.

Quaint place, 40 minute walk from Central Chester/10 minute drive.Room was spacious however covered in mysterious stains on the walls, chair and bedding. Our quilt had weird pink stains inside it which was somewhat gross when we saw.Good if you explore more than you rot away in your room and don’t value expensive items. Unclear how to lock the door and someone who was staying there got given the master key, which poses a huge hazard considering we couldn’t even lock the door.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUEShocking. Disastrous. Farcical. Just three of the words that could be used to describe our stay at this house of horror. The City Hotel flirts with the image of being a full on scam. The reception is a closed laptop, crammed behind a vacant bar and there are no staff on site after 5:00 pm. A feature of the reception/bar room is the bespoke wooden flooring that is warped, broken, and is quite literally swept under the rug that is placed over it. A potential death trap that nearly sent the both of us flying, but I’m sure the rug was a temporary measure before essential maintenance work was to be carried out to fix it..?This building and business has serious issues. During last nights downpour at 11pm, the fire alarms sounded. Water had entered the building via the roof. As normal procedure, all guests vacated the rooms and awaited downstairs. The out of hour emergency contact number redirected us to… a phone that was at the vacuous reception. By the time the fire service arrived, it was nearing to 1am. It was also interesting to hear from the fire department that this was not their first rodeo at The City Hotel and that this is an ongoing recurring issue. Three of the tenants rooms had new water features and so they had to be ejected from the hotel. We returned to bed at 2:00 am to see water damage to the ceiling of our room and throughout the night we had the pleasant sound of fire alarms randomly sounding off, like an interrogation torture room. And the promised cereal that came with the booking? Non existent. Absolutely livid. The best thing about this mad house was leaving. In fear of sounding too critical, I suppose I could say that if you don’t sleep and have gills, this is the place for you.

***DO NOT BOOK THIS IS A SCAM***It’s difficult to write a review regarding our stay when we were never let through the front door! On arriving at the hotel, you could see it was baron. Looks shocking from the outside. Even so, we pressed the ring doorbell numerous times with no answer. My boyfriend then knocked HEAVILY on doors and windows for around an hour. Still no answer. This was in the rain and if I had been on my own I would’ve felt very unsafe in the location. There is only one number “guests” can contact that is online and also on the sign at the front of the building. This number takes you to a “head office” who told us there was nothing they could do!!! They said it’s a shame and they’ve sent an ‘urgent message’ to the owner of the property to come and let us in, however, If they are ‘away from their desk’, there is nothing they can do and no way they can contact them. Please bear in mind this was between the hours of 5 and 7 pm so not an unusual time to want to check in. We told them we wanted a refund and they said they can’t even issue it they can just pass it on which is LAUGHABLE. I have tried to contact the hotel directly on every platform of social media, email and phone with no avail. So essentially, I’ve been robbed. Will be speaking to my bank today. Shout out to the moxy hotel who took us in under extremely short notice. Stay there instead :-)

I really enjoyed my stay here. Service was excellent, Vicky was brilliant, very welcoming.I stayed in Room 8, visiting the area for work. Well set out, all open plan, really liked it. Thought it would be a great room to return to with my wife, then later realised I’d be mortified as there is no door to the bathroom. Can you imagine? Ask for a different style room if you visit with your significant other. The shower is open plan, no door. The water ran all the way into the main area of the room, so had to use the spare towels to mop up. Designers designing, I guess. The building is next to a rail line, but the passing trains do not cause too much of a nuisance. There is a microwave oven in the room, and a fridge. The point of milk and bottle of water is a lovely touch. It’s a half hour walk into Chester, no effort at all, free parking available in a public car park behind the hotel. This is a lovely apartment-hotel, one I’ll definitely use again next time I’m in Chester.

Terrible stay. At 23.00, the hotel flooded, and the fire alarm went off. All residents evacuated, but there were no staff to be found. The mobile phone number we were given rang the phone behind reception, which was empty. …

Update- its now been a week and still not received a refund had to call the place we booked through and now the hotel have said theyve put the refund through and it will be a further 7 days wait and theyve been trying to get hold owner since to get sorted the reimbursement- At 11 pm water started pouring through our fire alarm causing the fire alarm to go off and the building had to evacuate. When we all got to reception we realised no staff were on the premises and it was basically impossible to get hold of anyone. After another girl rong the fire department and then got hold of vicky the management who arrived about an hour later and when returning back to our room water was flushing down in several places and the firemen deemed 3 rooms unsafe and had to turn electrics off for them rooms. Vicky assured us that the owner was on his way but it would take him an hour and he would pay for alternative stays for us. We were also informed that a flood happened back in July but it's clear the problem was never fixed. It got to about half 1 and it was clear the owner wasn't going to show up but we were assured by vicky that if we found a stay that night we would be reimbursed and given details to send our invoice too. After barely finding an alternative stay we got a message the following day saying we would be refunded the whole stay within 7 days by Dylan i then told him i would be sending the invoice the following day and he said vicky would sort it on Monday and I'm still waiting to hear anything back from anyone. So the staff here are only on the premises about 3 hours a day so if you have any problems during your stay theres a high possibility it wont get sorted.Avoid!
