Love this place! Beautiful traditional pub with lots of interesting info inside and a bar top covered with old pennies. Best pub to come into after a windy walk in the pentlands! Totally recommend the sticky toffee pudding! And the bus back to Edinburgh leaves from pretty much right outside the door. Perfect!

We spent with our dog a few days there and had a very good experience.PLACE: it is tidy and clean. Dedicated to Allan Ramsay, a famous Scottish character, the hotel is a bit like a museum, great idea!FOOD: we were actually pleasantly surprised, the food was well above what you would expect in a pub, a well deserved 5 star just for it.SERVICE: really friendly staff, they made us feel comfy and welcome at all times.FOR HIKERS: right outside the hotel, you have access to the Pentland National park hills. It's kind of hidden though, so check on google map the "River North Esk" behind the hotel, the access to the park is there.

Came here 20 years ago and loved it, booked to go backup December hope the Aberdeen Angus still as gorgeous.Dec 18. Really enjoyed our stay, the Manager Rose and her partner Kenny are really lovely people and made us feel truly welcome. On our second night after a day trip to the Highlands we arrived after the kitchen had shut. Were expecting to grab something cold from the bar but when Rose realised we hadn't eaten she cooked us fish and chips.fresh. Room was great it had an ensuite shower, kettle (with tea, coffee, biscuits etc), hairdryer and TV.Decent choice of ales and whisky behind the bar, will definitely not be leaving it another 20 years before I go back.

This small hotel in Carlops is also a mini museum dedicated to the works of Allan Ramsay, a Scottish pioneer in playwright and literature, who was brought up in the area.As soon as you go in, you are greeted by extremely welcoming, friendly, helpful and informative staff who will go out their way to help you whatever your enquiry may be.We stayed for two nights. On the first night we had a three course meal. The service wasn't the quickest, but all courses are made from scratch using locally sourced ingredients. The steak pie was especially good. The room was ok. Clean enough and tidy, but there was some crumbs and a stray ear plug on the floor. The bed was also a queen size, a little small for our liking but comfortable enough and we slept well. It would also be beneficial to have a long mirror in the room but we got a big mirror on request. One of the gents who works the front of house and the dog friendly bar, Kenny, was an absolute gent, very helpful and friendly.Overall, a pleasant stay in beautiful part of the countryside, and I would stay here again if I had to.

This place has been part of my life for many years. Used to take girlfriend's out for a drive then a meal. It's a good place to start and end many a walking day in the hills or on the gentle flats and visiting the post glacial features nearby and exploring the history of local witch scene and Jenny Barry and her cave.

Only went there for a quick bowl of soup and a pint for half an hour before the bus came. The soup was delicious. The bitter from the pump tasked of cleaning fluid. Should have gone for the bottled beer. Otherwise seemed like a nice enough place.

I don't know if I can adequately write or express how wonderful my time was here, especially with it being my first international stay.
Food - Amazing. We'd spent weeks planning this trip and poring over what restaurants to go to while in Edinburgh... We only went to one of those because we kept wanting to come back to eat at the inn! And breakfast is complimentary with your stay, which is a great deal for how much you get between the toast, cereal, juice, tea, and menu items (I strongly recommend the Scottish breakfast simply because the beans and tattie scones are LIFE).
Location - The area is beautiful for taking a quiet walk through the countryside. It's also right by a bus stop for easy public transportation. Uber isn't available in the area, but it's only a 20-ish minute drive by taxi or personal car to Edinburgh.
Service - Beautiful. Very attentive. We met the owners who were so kind with helping us figure out buses and recommendations for when we were going to Inverness later in the week. Thank you Rosemary and the rest of the staff at The Allan Ramsay!
