Amtrak invests billions in eco-friendly train cars

Amtrak has announced a $7.3 billion initiative to build 83 new trains for select interstate and Northeast routes, aiming to serve over 1.5 million passengers each year.
Amtrak has partnered with Siemens to manufacture this new fleet of trains, which are set to modernize their service.
The rail company has also requested Siemens to provide options for up to 130 additional trains to support its expansion plans.

Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn stated, "These new trains will transform rail travel by replacing our outdated fleet, some of which are 40 to 50 years old, with modern, American-made equipment. This investment is crucial for enhancing and expanding our Northeast Regional and state-supported services, enabling our customers to travel in comfort and safety while significantly lowering emissions of harmful pollutants."
Many of their existing train cars are nearly half a century old. The new train sets will feature amenities like "more comfortable seating, individual power outlets, onboard Wi-Fi, USB ports, improved lighting, panoramic windows, larger vestibules, self-service food options, a digital seat reservation system, and navigation displays," among other enhancements.
FRA Deputy Administrator Amit Bose remarked, "Amtrak's acquisition of new rolling stock is a landmark event. These advanced trainsets will enable Amtrak to operate and deliver services in a manner that is safer, more efficient, and highly reliable."
Moreover, the train cars contracted through Siemen will consume less energy and utilize hybrid battery systems for part of the fleet. They will also prioritize accessibility with features such as "inductive hearing loops, accessible restrooms and vestibules, an accessible food service car, and lifts for passengers with mobility challenges, including those who use wheelchairs," along with enhanced cleaning protocols and no-contact restroom controls.

Michael Cahill, President of Siemens Mobility, Rolling Stock in North America, stated, "These new trains, which will feature our first hybrid battery operations in the U.S., are set to revolutionize American travel. They promise a more sustainable and comfortable experience, crafted with excellence and pride in Sacramento, California. Over the last ten years, we've collaborated closely with Amtrak and its state partners to create trains that cater to the needs of travelers across America; these next-generation models enhance that legacy and offer even more."
Amtrak's ridership reached its highest point in 2021, approximately 55 percent of levels seen before the pandemic, according to the New York Times.
As per Amtrak:
"The new trains will serve the Northeast Corridor, long-distance Palmetto, and various state-supported routes, replacing Amtrak's own Amfleet, Metroliner, and certain state-owned equipment across the country. Besides the Northeast Regional, other routes will include Adirondack, Carolinian, Cascades, Downeaster, Empire Service, Ethan Allen Express, Keystone Service, Maple Leaf, New Haven/Springfield Service (Amtrak Hartford Line and Valley Flyer), Pennsylvanian, Vermonter, and Virginia Services."
Significantly, Amtrak will implement a "long-term parts and service agreement" for the manufacturing of these trains, especially in light of current chip and parts shortages in the U.S.
The company also highlighted that this project will generate 2,100 jobs at a Siemens facility in Sacramento. This initiative is in line with President Joe Biden's pledge to promote greener transportation methods in the U.S., particularly mass transit. To fund the project, Amtrak plans to utilize $200 million in funding authorized by Congress and will seek further approval from Congress in the future.
