The rooms and overall building are honestly a bit dated however the outdoor onsen is the biggest and most natural out of the several that we have stayed in Hirayu. The more modern hotels have more artificial areas, such as concrete lining everywhere. So for us, we preferred this one as that's the highlight. Plus, there are spacious private onsens included, which are not found at the other places. We don't always need modern hotels in the countryside and appreciate the onsen here much more. Also, as there are fewer rooms here, the staff are more friendly and attentive.

Was the window open? Unfortunately, there were small insects in the room before I went to sleep.

A maze-like room. A dusty TV with no wires. A yukata with yellowed front. It was sad.

Very few staff in the hotel. The restaurant manager did not speak English and could not explain anything to us about the traditional dishes. All the Onsen were reserved and we had to go to the community one. The cushion was made of small compacted balls…. very hard.

I stayed in a room with no view. There was an indescribable smell as soon as I entered...The bath was far away, but the food was close so it was nice. Three Hida beef nigiri for dinner cost about 1,600 yen. good. Breakfast is average. The bath is good. My wife said she was concerned about the bubbles...

5 minutes walk to Hirayu Onsen bus terminal. From there you can go to Kamikochi and Mt. Norikura. The hot spring after climbing was the best.
