It was everything I wanted from a Ryokan experience! The Ryokan is in a quiet neighborhood with many traditional houses (despite being only 10 minutes walk away from Kyoto station); the Ryokan is very pretty and well-kept, the hosts and staffs are all super friendly and spoke very good English! The futons were surprisingly comfortable to sleep in, I had a long dream that night. I was also very glad that our room had a private bathroom, which provided more convenience and privacy compared to some other traditional ryokans. I wish we had more time to reserve the use of the private onsen, but our schedule was too busy so we didn't try it. You can reserve a slot for the private onsen between 4pm~9pm, and then from 9pm~11pm it is open to guests on a first-come-first-serve basis. The traditional Japanese breakfast at the ryokan was very nutritious and we are grateful to be able to sample the varied ingredients and flavours. We had to cancel our final breakfast due to changes in our travel plans, but the host surprised us in the morning with a bag of food and drinks for us to take on our journey - we were very touched by their care and hospitality! When we checked out we were also gifted a Polaroid photo of us, as well as some coasters as a gift!We would definitely stay with Ryokan Shimizu again if we ever visit Kyoto again, and I would love to stay for longer next time so we can appreciate it even better. ❤️

The rooms are small, but clean and comfortable with tatami floors and a "Showa retro" vibe. The amenities are basic, and the price reflects that, but the staff is attentive and the location is within walking distance of Kyoto station. With an adults only policy, midnight curfew and suggested quiet hours, this is the perfect retreat for those who value simplicity, peace and quiet. The optional breakfast is a delicately presented delight. The staff is able to communicate in adequate English. There is a bath on the premises that can be reserved for private use

In 2010, my sister and I stayed here instead of on a graduation trip. When the expressway holiday was 1000 yen, I went from Kanto to Osaka, Hyogo, and Kyoto for a few days and stayed here near Kyoto Station. There was a parking lot for a few cars, and the location was convenient for sightseeing, which was very helpful.I was surprised that I was able to eat all the rice in the bowl in the morning with my young stomach in my 20s.That's how delicious the breakfast was. The bath was also reserved for private use, so my sister and I were able to relax and enjoy it.The welcome drink was also cold and very tasty. This is an inn that I would like to visit again with my husband once I have finished raising my children.

It's been over 10 years since I last stayed there, and it was close to the station, everyone was warm, and it was really nice. Even now, we talk about how good it was to be friends. I don't know how it is now, but I was happy that they offered me tea when I returned to the hotel. And the breakfast was delicious. The two of us finished the ohitsu rice together!
