We attended a wedding nearby and the chequers Inn was on the cheaper side of the hotels listed on our invite. We stayed for 2 nights and had a really pleasant stay. The rooms are dated but in a very quaint way, matching with the rest of the hotel and bar (dated back to the 1400s). It was certainly packed full of character. We found the bed to be really comfortable and the room spacious. Hot water was off on the first the morning but from other reviews I have read, reception can turn this back on easily enough....again, its an old building so these sort of things are to be expected. The woman who checked us in was really helpful and helped us out with taxi numbers for the following day. There is a gorgeous cafe a few doors down (cafe jazz or something along those lines) where we had breakfast both mornings and it was absolutely delicious and a very reasonably price. The location of the hotel is also perfect with lots of pubs, eateries and even a tesco express nearby. I would definitely stay here again if we were back in the area.

Honestly wished I'd read reviews before, on just checking in this afternoon 4pm 07/09/24 the place was deserted? …

This is quite an interesting place to review, seeing what others have said over the years both here and on their Facebook page. It’s clear that it did once thrive with returning customers 10 years ago, and now there’s been a shift. I really do wish them well to recover.First thing to consider above all, is that it is by far the cheapest in the area (£55 for a single), and that’s exactly why I went, and so cheap is what we should all expect. Yes the rooms are from the 70s, but have all standard facilities. No complaints. It is a shame that as it is so quiet, there’s no one in the bar (so not a nice experience to sit in there), they don’t have a chef, and the sauna isn’t open. Do make sure to email before going to confirm what’s happening on your due date to plan ahead.Who wants the comfort of a Travelodge? I want the personality of an area, and this is the oldest in Hartfield from the 14th century! The pub is BEAUTIFUL. I’ll be back. :)

To find an older place to stay, some of the choices must be a cave. Our room was in a newer extension (from 1981) but the lobby, pub and older rooms are from 1452. |Definitely feels a little worn. I am happy we spent the night there but I don't think I would choose it for next time in Forest Row.

We visited from London as I lived in the area many years ago and it was so nice to see the same owner was there and friendly and upbeat as ever! Would highly recommend this pub to anyone visiting the area. Old English style pub perfect for visitors.

Staff lovely and welcoming and helpful ( is it gino? I can't remember) Unfortunately the room hadnt been cleaned after the last guests but we let them know and they dealt with it quickly. That's the only reason for the 3 stars on the room. Will be back next year same time. Right in the middle of the village so great location.

Made booking on the Internet, and when we arrived, we then had to pay cash as there was no card facility| So a trip to the local cash point. There was no lighting to see your way around the corridors. …

Completely awful. Run if you're given room 44. Though the building is dated and you'd expect some antique quirks, lighting in the corridors was poor and there was no headroom. Getting up to our room required scaling an ancient staircase which was falling to pieces and which was also not lit. Really quite dangerous. The shared shower room/toilet was grimy without proper soap and there was no privacy glass. The room was incredibly dusty, probably due to the ceiling which was falling apart and peeling away. Plus we hit our heads on the beams multiple times (no mind your head signs). The bed was hard and fairly mucky, we didn't bother peeling back the duvet to see what was underneath and instead spent the night shivering under our T shirts. To top it off the heating didn't work.No water/tea/coffee facilities in the room, though we had been left a stained towel in case we were mad enough to take a shower. This isn't just bad it's downright dangerous.

After reading the reviews I was slightly concerned, but as the saying goes you get what you pay for. My room was rm 35 - comfy 4 poster bed. The bathroom was a retro orange, the water was hot. …
