I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoy authentic Japanese style meals and hot spring. The family run this hotel with a lot of thoughtful care and hospitality. The traditional Japanese meals were authentic and served with fresh Hida beef and local vegetables. As a hot spring lover, the hot spring were beyond expectation. There are private rooms and shared rooms for hot spring, and they all share a great view of a quiet forest. (It was snowy the day I came, and the experience of bathing in hot spring while surrounded by the snowy forest was superb.) Overall, it’s a very pleasant stay!

Hospitable family run ryokan. I’ve been to Hirayu three times and this is my favorite stay so far. You get fantastic value with the outdoor private baths, clean and spacious rooms, and voluminous breakfast and dinner. The owner was very nice to accommodate to our dietary requirements, but on our first night stay there were so much Wagyu beef that we were barely able to finish. They were also helpful to provide information, maps, and recommendations for our visit to Kamikochi. Would highly recommend this place for anyone who is a foodie or just want to support small local businesses.

If you’d like to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan, I recommend this place. The room is very spacious and equipped with a toilet. Our room did have a slightly pungent smell but our room was closest to the onsen area and it was most likely minerals from the onsen — by the end of the night, it was bearable.Okay, the food was GORGEOUS. Especially the Hida beef! My husband and I had Hida beef previously in Takayama so we could compare and we agree that the ryokan’s Hida beef is super high quality. For dinner, they kept sending dish after dish to the point my belly was gonna explode. They will lay out the Hida beef, vegetables for grilling, trout and Japanese appetisers first, and then followed by rice, salmon sashimi, soba, miso soup. For breakfast, it was a simple traditional Japanese meal but I felt it was a lot for me. It was also on the sweet soy sauce side. The private outdoor onsen was great! It was very HOT. There’s 3 of them and they all vary in different sizes. Some tips for the foreigners:1) It’s only a 5 mins walk from Hirayu bus terminal — it’s easier to get here by walking by the main road rather than the side road with the construction. Please be careful when walking by the main road as there are cars and buses.2) Since this is a very traditional Japanese ryokan, as a foreigner you need to manage your expectations. The staff here are very polite and generally keep to themselves. Their English is limited so there’s not gonna be someone who will proactively explain to you every step of the way. The food may not be to your taste. Just keep these things in mind!3) if you’re trying to book this place, you can book directly from their website and use a Google translator — the form filling is easy. With dinner and breakfast, it costs 15,000 yen. It will be slightly cheaper for just dinner and much cheaper for just breakfast.

Family run ryokan. Very clean rooms and common areas, delicious food, friendly service from the ryokan owners. Available onsen pools both indoor and outdoor, sulphur based and iron based. Healing purposes. The Hida beef meals were terrific...Worth spending the night here enroute to Kamikochi.

The building feels a little old, but the host and landlady were very kind and nice. The dinner was sumptuous and featured a lot of meat. However, the meat was so good that it was a little tough for an elderly man. You might have been able to eat it if you left it on a wire rack to drip off the oil. The location was convenient as it was close to the bus terminal.

I think the cost performance is good. If your purpose is to go to Kamikochi, it is enough. People who are looking for services and facilities for Hirayu Onsen may not be satisfied.[Good points]Good access to KamikochiOld but well keptThe hot spring smells like iron, it feels greatdinner is deliciousThe waitress who took care of me during dinner was kind.[Somewhat disappointing]I wish the refrigerator in the room had a power plug plugged in.There are no glass cups in the room (only teacups)There is no place to wash your body at the private hot spring. The water in the hand washing area of the toilet in the room only comes out very slowly.

Seeking cool air on the Hotaka RopewayI stayed in Okuhida.I was looking forward to the open-air bath, but there was only a small space available, so I tried to use it, but a horsefly flew in and I quickly left.Use the public bath in the morning. The hot water seems to have a lot of iron.Dinner was scheduled for 6 o'clock. It's mainly Hida beef, so it's not luxurious. I ended up leaving the meat out because it was fatty. I thought steak was easier to eat. The grilled vegetables were delicious. In the morning, the hoba miso is delicious, not too sweet. The rice is freshly cooked for both breakfast and dinner. The young Nakai-san who served usHe was very attentive and wonderful. Okuhida was also not cool in the mornings and evenings this year. The yukata was a perfect fit for me, who is 150cm tall, so I decided to go small. I would like to have a drinking cup in the room.

I visited here with my wife for the first time in 23 years.I like small places like this more than big hot spring inns, so I was very satisfied. The Hida beef dinner was very delicious.Of course, the breakfast was also very satisfying.I love the hot springs and open-air baths. The sulfur springs are so hot that you can't get rid of the smell for a while.I was able to enjoy the hot springs to my heart's content even though it was snowing. All the staff members are also very nice.I would definitely like to go there again.
